Robert, by a mile. Ironically, it's more "Soulful", that the original.... "Love is like peeing in your pants, everyone sees it but only you feel its warmth"

Didn't we just have this discussion like a month ago?
Anyways, both versions are special for their own reasons.

Cherrelle easily. I love the Minneapolis synths and the last few minutes of the extended version are killer.
I never liked Robert Palmer's cover. I don't think the song works from a male point of view. I don't like Robert Palmer in general.

I agree! The lyrics sound silly coming from a male The Cherrelle version is superior.

I know right? Not all men give it up on the first night. Both genders can be pushy. That's how it is.
I still laugh how Jimmy & Terry had to TELL Cherrelle to "put some street in it". Same advice they gave to you-know-who.

I like Robert's version, but I prefer Cherrelle's. I like her vocals better. "And When The Groove Is Dead And Gone, You Know That Love Survives, So We Can Rock Forever" RIP MJ

To everyone afraid to mention "that person"...
Oh, and I prefer Cherelle's version. The Jimmy Jam/Terry Lewis beat is slammin'. I do like Robert's version, though. How about the Mariah remake?

I like the extended dance mix on Robert's maxi single the best. I forgot what the original mix of his version sounds like. I heard Mariah's once when it was first released and didn't like it. I didn't like anything on the Glitter soundtrack. You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. At least it's not one of those "Today's music is no good and it was better 500 years ago" threads. Palmer's version for me definitely. I dig Cherelle's, but the song is way more amusing when sung from a male POV. At any rate, it's my favorite song by both of them. Of all Robert's covers ("You Are in My System," "Mercy Mercy Me/I Want You," etc.), this is the one he really knocked out of the park. Well, his version of "Tell Me I'm Not Dreaming" is also killer. Cherrelle, easily. But I enjoyed the Palmer edition.
Also, technically, if lovers begin a daliance before midnight and finish it in the AM, it isn't an one night stand but a two day stand. I think that this is the actual expectation.
There is an additional interest to this topic.
Most of Robert Palmer's best funkish music actually appeared on his 1983 LP Pride. Very underrated LP. He used The System's David Frank on keyboards to produce a top level, authentic-to-the-original cover of "You Are In My System" by The System. This song made the charts in the US, the UK, and Germany.
Other highlights from this LP include "It's Not Difficut" and "Pride".
In the early/mid 80s there was a lot of funk-ish music crossing from the R&B chart to the US and, more frequently, the UK pop charts and vice-versa.
David Bowie's "Lets Dance" got to # 14 on the US R&B chart in 1983.
U.S. R&B/Funk diva Melba Moore had her "Love's Comin At Ya" reached #15 on the UK pop chart in 1982 while it did not appear on the US pop chart. These examples are only few of dozens of examples. A few more examples, the US R&B Chart: "Shock the Monkey", "She Blinded Me with Science" "Out of Touch."
You may find that it is worth the time to take a look and listen at the song lists thathave been posted to Itunes Ping that meld together rhythmically & stylisticallycompatible early/mid 80s R&B/funk songs and early/mid 80s synth pop/new wavesongs. Lots of music that was either forgotten or not ever learnedof but was very enjoyable or would be very enjoyable if it was rediscovered or discovered for the 1st time by people that enjoy this type of music. People like you?

Robert Palmer, all damn day.
I used to have a crush on him when I was a kid, too. I loved all his songs - the ones I heard on the video channels, anyway. They all sounded the same but they were awesome to me. "I don't think you'd do well in captivity." - random person's comment to me the other day

It was for her own good. You know how the ORG acts whenever they say it. Mariah's version does NOTHING for me.

I don't know the names of the songs or remember what they sound like, as I only heard them once (when the album came out). That was because my cousin had it. I saw the movie once too, so maybe I heard some of the songs twice. You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B.
