OK. Bear with me. My memory is very foggy on this. But when I was a kid living in NYC I remember watching a one-off musical program (special) in the early 1980's (definately no later than 1984). It may have been a sydicated special but I honestly don't think it was; I don't remember there being any commercial interruptions and we didn't have cable at the time, plus it was the kind of socially conscious programming PBS would do, which leads me to believe it was on public television. Anywho...if I recall correctly it was the story of several young adults and their fears about become adults and the challenges they faced going out into the world on their own. This wasn't a concert or stage play. It was a filmed story with acting (don't remember if it was more comedic or dramatic; probably a bit of both) and dancing (I'm pretty sure) and there were songs (musical numbers) that the characters would perform. The only song I vaguely remember was called "Poverty". It was a hip upbeat song (as hip and upbeat as a song about poverty can be). I've Googled and YouTubed myself silly seached for any crumbs that might lead me to this show. Nada. If any of this rings any bells for any of you please share your thoughts no matter how insignificant you think they might be. Thank you.

The show I think you;re reffering to was called "The Righteous Appples" (?)

Mykelti Williamson, EG Daly, Bob Harcum and Kutee were on the show. I used to watch that show religiously.

I don't think Stoney was a regular but I think he did appear on one episode. I think Ernest (Raj from 'What's Happening!!') Thomas and Irene Cara made camoes on that show too.

OK...so I'm not crazy (now I feel silly/guilty about deleting any mention of Stoney Jackson from my original post ). He was the only person embedded in my brain for all these years. Him...and that poverty song. The show's opening is posted on YouTube but no Stoney. I knew I couldn't have confused Stoney with any of the other cast members. I'm reading now that the show was on for 2 seasons but I can only recall seeing the one episode...twice. It really left an impression on me. I spent an inordinate amout of time alone in front on the TV. Even had my own little chair I'd pull right up to the set. PBS was totally awesome back in the day. I wonder if tapes of all those shows I used to watch still exist; Powerhouse, 3-2-1 Contact, Today's Special, etc... God...if I had a time machine.... Maybe if I get a job at PBS they'd let me raid their vaults. I'M SERIOUS.

Yes PBS used to have really good teen-oriented shows on back in those days. There was a guy named "Joey" that used to be on "Righteous" and he could have easily passed for a light skinned

black kid..but he was Jewish. He was also one of the kids in the 1980 movie "Hollywood Knights".

(classic flick by the way).

If "Righteous" had been promoted right it could have really taken off. That show tackled EVERYTHING but at the same time they kept it light and entertaining. Everytime I see Mykel or EG Daly on TV I always think of that show.

Do you remember the PBS show with actor Joe Morton as a high school teacher (Mr. Jeter)?

That was a great show too. Exceptional acting by Mr. Morton. That show was on around the same time as "Righteous".

I agree with you...A time machine and a 1980 Beta-max would be great to have.

The show with Joe Morton isn't triggering any memories. According to Wikipedia "Watch Your Mouth" premiered in April 1978 [I had yet to turn 3 years old]. I can't honestly say I have any memories before the age of 4. Unless reruns of it ran for a few more years chances are I never watched it.

I found a few magazine articles about "The Righteous Apples" and its producer Topper Carew. I need to get in touch with this man.

..now why does the name Topper Carew ring a bell? I know I've heard his name somewhere else before.

Mr. Carew's a successful film and television writer, producer, director. The movie "D.C. Cab" and the sitcom "Martin" [Lawrence] are among his many credits.
