James Brown - Untitled
This track was so damn funky brother man didn't even give it a title and left it as it is. Sampled in so many hip-hop songs especially "We're All in the Same Gang" and "Murder By Reason of Insanity".

I hate to be the nerd, but .. This isn't the JB's. This is the James Brown Orchestra, the band before the JB's.

According to the booklet, both Collins brothers are listed on there
Don't have it in front of me but, I found this.....

Just jiving
But I'm sure Catfish & Boots are listed
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
I'm kinda sure of it too. That bass and guitar combo sound too much alike to NOT be Bootsy & Catfish.

ok....I have the booklet from the cd and it states:
Possibly recorded November 23rd, 1970, King Studios, Cincinnati
Unconfirmed line-up of musicians. At this time The J.B.'s were: Darryl 'Hasaan' Jamison & Jerome 'Jasaan' Sanford (trumpets); Robert McCollough(tenor sax); St. Clair Pinckney(baritone sax);Bobby Byrd(keyboards); Phelps 'Catfish' Collins & Hearlon 'Cheese' Martin (guitars); William 'Bootsy' Collins (bass); Clyde Stubblefield & John 'Jabo' Starks (drums); Johnny Griggs(congas & percusson).

I stand corrected ... I posted without actually listening and I confused this track with Funk Bomb and I felt compelled to say something, because many people just apply the term JB's to all of Brown's bands. But the difference between the James Brown Orchestra, a selection of highly skilled and experience professionals who tightened up Brown's music like no other, and the first set of the JB's - a young, inexperienced, raw and rather undisciplied bunch of youngsters, couldn't be bigger. Most people today don't realize how radical the change of direction in Brown's music really was when most of the James Brown Orchestra members left him standing and he was forced to hire Bootsy's bunch.

Samples:
The Collins brothers are ALL on that mothafucka.

It also should be noted MOST hip-hop songs sampled from the work of the JB's than the James Brown Orchestra though even "Night Train" was sampled but it's been mostly from the JB's that a lot of hip-hop acts have sampled during and after the initial Collins brothers era of the band.
