Not only were they the core band behind many of the great STAX recordings, they had a few nice bluesy/groovy releases on their own.

...Green Onions

...Behave Yourself

...Tic-Tac-Toe

...Chinese Checkers

...Soul Dressing

...My Sweet Potato

...Hip-Hug-Her

...Hang 'Em High

...Time Is Tight

...Melting Pot

Last year me and my friends went on a road trip to memphis. We stopped off at the Stax Museum as well. It's not the actual studio...it got torn down in BK or financial troubles or something...but the museum is in the same spot and looks similar...

they had original sheet music...reels...costumes....consoles...equipment...it as awesome. I got a dvd of a eropean performance by the revue they had during Otis' time.

I made sure I made it to Stax because I suffered thru the graceland experience(I didn't capitalize it for a reason). My friend is a big elvis guy and my other friend don't hate on him. I even refused to pay for the ticket...my friend was like U can't just sit in the car...the hell I can't...but he bought a ticket and said just come along.

anyways.. Stax was much better...they had a little in-house short film they showed...but all the sheet music...reels...costumes....consoles...equipment...was awesome.

I regret not visiting my brother when he was teaching at Rhodes College in Memphis.

Great excuse to also visit the STAX museum. One day.

I also toured the Stax Museum and I was totally blown away. The organ that was used in the recording of "Green Onions"... like holy shit, lol. Was amazing to see.

I just bought "Hip Hug-her" on vinyl not long ago. My folks had that record and i was always kinda intrigued by the cover as a kid, heh - and loved the music. Listening to it again really takes me back.

They had such a great sound.

You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit who’s never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton

^ Nice.

Another cool one from that album...

...Opus de Soul

On the Steve Cropper tip, there's a collaboration with ex-Rascals keyboardist/vocalist Felix Cavaliere that was released in 2008 called Nudge It Up a Notch.

I did Graceland, and it was fun, but only from the point of view of the ridiculous. I mean, it's a little interesting to glimpse inside someone's life (like how the Physician's Desk Reference was in the pile of Elvis's favorite books), and I do actually like Elvis, but mostly it's about the hype.

But I took a touristy waving picture beside Elvis' grave (it was a bit disrespecful, granted I was only 18) but people were looking at me as if I was peeing on it. My brother and I thought we were so subversive listening to Public Enemy as we drove in lol

What the elvis phenomenon has become is something uniquely american and amusing

Stax sounds more interesting for very different reasons
