Not trying to derail this thread, just thought it was silly of someone who's a fan of a gimmick to dub a talent like Amy "overrated". R.I.P. Amy. Such a shame that a talented vocalist and songwriter is gone way too soon.

Agreed! As a matter of fact, go back and listen to the full Frank album, along with live performances and B-sides (rarities). The girl was a superb singer! No doubt about that. Back To Black was just the tip of the iceberg, but it definitely wasn't the nail in the coffin. Check me out and add me on:

FunkyAphrodite said: Saw her with Prince at the IndigO2 aftershow on 22nd Sept. 2007 doing Love Is A Losing Game. She was clearly very nervous and boozy but one hell of a performance. I really wish I could have seen that performance...i guess in this age of cheap stardom...it is all to easy for people label amy as hype.... But she was alot more than that ....back to black broke the moulde we would not have adele or her like if amy did not open the big door.....i will miss her and feel gutted she did not beat the demons....only the good die young....amy was good if you dont have a copy of back to black it will be the best $5 you've spent this year! I'm shocked. I'm not surprised but I am shocked. She was so young. It is shocking to me that people can't see the consequences of their actions... she has OD before. That should have been a wake up call.
Sorry to hear this news because I thought she had a lot of talent. I liked her style. "Remember, one man's filler is another man's killer" -- Haystack

R.I.P Amy, and thank you for the music

I find her passing tragic and heartbreaking but not necessarily surprising. Having said that, we don't know how she died yet. It may have been a drug and/or alcohol relapse; it may have been an aneurysm or pulmonary embolism; heck, it may have been a bee sting that she was severely allergic to. None of that changes the fact we lost a very talented yet troubled singer. Whatever demons she had, I hope she has finally found peace wherever her soul may be. RIP Amy, you left us with some great music, and you will be sorely missed.

Oh, is that poster a Whispering-Janet fan? No wonder there's no appreciation then for a real singer and songwriter.

She was one of the very rare massive talents entering the scene in the 00s. While I somehow haven't been a real fan of her Retro-Soul-Pop sound (at least I couldn't really get into her stuff so far), I appreciate her great capabilities as a vocalist. That gig with Prince was incredible, two skilled musicians at the top of their game!
This is indeed a tragedy, and I feel with her family and friends. The unfriendly tone of some ugly comments in this thread aside, I have to confess one thing though: unfortunately, it indeed wasn't a surprise. That doesn't make it any less of a tragedy though.
RIP Amy... | |

I LOVE LOVE LOVE the deluxe Frank album and had to buy a few copies of it since my son absconded my first one and I gave another away as a gift. I even bought it before Back to Black and that first album is what really hooked me on her.

You are right about people assuming her death was from drugs; it might not have been.
But I'm ashamed to say I've never listened to her music before today. I actually quite like it, but I can't become a fan now 'cause I'll look like a bandwagon jumper..
Anyway, this is sad, and some of the people here are sick. R.I.P. Amy Winehouse..

I'm so upset by this news. Can't eat or do shit right now. I'm mad that such an amazing talent and person is gone way too soon. She had so much more to give.

Just like any other person, celebrity or not, that is that young...it's sad to hear that they have passed away. Sure I predicted, just as most have, that this would happen, I surely was HOPING that I would be wrong. But now that I see that I wasn't, Amy's death still saddens and shocks me that she is no longer in the land of the living. Although I wasn't a big fan of hers, I still liked some of her music (most of it from the album "Frank") and I do feel that she was a great talent. Hopefully now she is at peace. I will forever love and miss you...my sweet Prince.

Tell her millions of fans that, who bought her records and seen her many many tours and TV shows & movies including myself. Was that necessary to bring her in this? I mean really! will ALWAYS think of like a "ACT OF GOD"! I have skimmed through her albums in the past and liked them, and also recall enjoying Frank better. I will have to check them all out again, though I feel like a hypocrite. I liked her from afar though at first I thought she was strange, but she grew on me and I came to appreciate her. Few months ago I could sort of relate to rehab though it wasn't for drugs

Why miss hearing some great lyrics and an incredibly unique voice? Buy both albums and the Live DVD, your musical life will be much better for it and fuck what anyone else thinks!

My experience was actually reverse. I brought into the whole Back to Black hype and even though it was great, Frank was the album that hipped me into why Amy was an incredible voice and songwriter. I brought it after Back to Black, which sucks, but I'm glad that I picked it up sooner than later. Its sound and flavor was so relevatory and related to me more than Back to Black.
The deluxe edition of Frank was/is amazing as well! Love it. Check me out and add me on:

I'm re-watching the documentary and her father said when she was little she dreamed of being a roller-skating waitress.
She also speaks of her insecurities and how the bigger her hair was, the better she felt. She and an interviewer are in a record shop and they pull out a Ronettes album. He said 'look, their hair is like yours' and she touched her poof and said 'no, mine is like theirs'.
I also adore her speaking voice with her accent, it always puzzles me how people with accents can sing without one.

I don't know why but I was hoping she would beat the drug habit ....just seeing her face on the front page of sunday british newspapers ...leaves me cold...at 27 years young I guess it will take maybe a few days for the press to understand what we have lost here....i feel for her mum ...shocked she a londoner like me ... Apart from the wankers on this site and twitter she has a real deep fan base....deep...lady ga ga will not fill this music gap....so sad ! Gotcha, I kind of felt that way after James Brown died, but I still bought some of his older albums that I'd never heard. Why waste a moment? No one knows what tomorrow may bring. You can also go to YouTube and watch some of the official videos and the live ones from around '03, '04 & '05 are really special.

As I said, you're not getting it! I'm not debating whether she died of a drugs overdose or not - in fact, it is highly likely that she died as a result of her lifestyle. For the very last time, I am saying that it doesn't matter what she died of, it is a tragedy and your dismissing it as not mattering as much if she died because of taking drugs is both heartless and misguided.
And, for the record, I'm not an "Amy Stans", I don't even own any of her records. But I appreciated her talent and I'm, more importantly, a human being. [Edited 7/23/11 16:03pm] ...we have only scratched the surface of what the mind can do...

You know I really don't get when people who are either addicts or suicidal, when they finally come to a point where it SEEMS that they are turning their life around for the better, that all of a sudden something like this happens. It's like the calm before the storm. It's a strange thing, but it happens all the time. This is probably something that I'll never understand.
Then the fact that she passed at the same age as Jimi Hendrix, Jim Morrison, and Janis Joplin...I know the media is going to constantly eat that up. I will forever love and miss you...my sweet Prince.

I feel that both lies and the truth are not needed sometimes and can make thngs worse. Would you say what you feel, even though it's not the most polite, in order to show you're honest?Knowing that the comment doesn't do any good? Or do you think it's better to not say anything about it. Sometimes it's better to hold off on how you feel because it could hurt someone else. I'm not saying you have to be fake or lie. Being honest is no excuse for being mean.

The writing was on the wall. Although i am soooo happy i saw her at the peak of her form in the best music venue in the world Glasgow Barrowlands(The night after she called the previous audience "monkey cunts, then stormed off stage)
I shed a tear this morning for her. Very sad. Her voice will remain hauntingly beautiful.
