BET announced in a tweet Wednesday night that a tribute to the beloved Detroit star Aailyah is in the works and will air next month.

This year marks the 10th anniversary of Aaliyah's death; the rising R&B singer-movie star was killed in a plane crash on August 25, 2001 in the Bahamas after a music video shoot.

At the time of her death, Aaliyah had just released her third album and had completed production on Queen of the Damned, based on the Anne Rice novel.

Well damn BET.. they finally do something nice for a change but I question how this tribute will be executed though:-|

Its been that long? It feels like yesterday. Aaliyah has a big fanbase and alot of supporters TILL THIS DAY which seemed to always amaze me. She was a very sweet girl. R.I.P

I remember the day the news broke like it was yesterday, what I was doing before it, thinking it's not real and just something she was to do in a movie when they announced it, and just being in shock when watching the news. I don't recall crying, but just being like WTF and then taping her videos cause I had her albums and was playing her for all of middle school and high school. BET was all over her when it happened.

I am so pleased to see her passing honored, though I'm sure BET will find a way to fumble this.

Oh I forgot about poor Luther. Ok, so the real question is when are they gonna do a James, Luther, Left Eye tribute? I liked Aaliyah but she really wasn't that great of an artist.

It's the cheapest tribute they can come up with...given had it been James Brown or Luther they may have to spend much much more money.

I guess BET thinks that Aaliyah fits their demo more. IDK

Unless Barry Hankerson is paying for this so he can sell her back catalog.

No one is going to watch a James Brown tribute special. At least not BET's viewing demographic. Check PBS for that.

I cried when I found out she died and was walking around in a daze for like, a week. I adored her.

I remember when "One in a Million" was about to come out, just anticipating the cd, and then that day at school pretty much just counting down the hours till the bell rang and I could get it from the mall a couple blocks away. I was hyper-pissed when the mall guards told us teens weren't allowed in at that time of day and turned us away. lol

Thank you. No disrespect towards Aaliyah, but she was nowhere near being a legend before she died. I think people are more caught up in and bothered by the "violent" manner in which she died, which was a horrible plane crash. But c'mon people...she was just an okay artist. I can think of so many more legendary artists who deserve tribute shows - and before it reaches some nth anniversary of their death - before Aaliyah.

As much as I don't care for Beyonce, she's huge now, and people were acting like Aaliyah was on her way to Beyonce/up-in-the-stratosphere status when she died. Um no, she wasn't. She was just a talented artist doing her thing. Nothing more, nothing less.

Thank you! Aaliyah was a b-list singer/dancer. Before she died her album was flopping. After her death people ran out and brought it. I liked her but damn the bullshit has to stop

Aaliyah was big in the black community, hence BET doin a special or whatever for her. It's not on MTV or VH1 peoples. At her death, how many black females were bigger than her ... Janet and Missy Elliot. Brandy and Monica were bigger a few years prior to her death, Beyonce and Destiny's Child hadn't really took off yet.

Just like someone said early, BET caters to her age group. JB, Luther, Rick james, Barry White ... we can expect TV One or even VH1 Classic or something to do a tribute for them.

She died in 2001. Destiny's Child were on top. That was the same year Survivor came out and before that The Writings on The Wall was huge. Brandy was still popular by then too. Moesha was just coming to an end. Aaliyah was never more popular than Brandy (maybe more than Monica) but not Brandy. She was always a b list artist. Even in the black community. It was Brandy, then Aaliyah, then Monica.

Yeah Bet is for youngsters. Talented artist never get any love on Bet

I remembered (in the black community) more people were Aaliyah fans vs Destiny's Child at that time. On the pop side it was different though.

By 2001, Brandy hadn't dropped a single since 99, so Aaliyah was in the light more than Brandy musically. Brandy more more into her sitcom at that time.

I don't see her as a b-list artist. All her albums went double platinum, never charted lower than 18 on the pop charts (1 number 1 album) and never lower than 3 on the R&B charts.

I also remember Brandy and Monica getting mainstream radio airplay, and Aaliyah not so much aside from Try Again and Are You That Somebody. I also remember her self titled album dropping on the charts very well after debuting at 2 and then going to #1 after her death, and yes I bought it after too though I didn't like it at first listen before her death despite loving her. I remember MTV doing specials on her in 2001, so maybe that period was to be her crossover period. Brandy was the biggest of the 3 for sure though, and Aaliyah was talented and stylish with edge in her videos.

not to be mean BUT: was her legacy even that big???? I don't remember people following her like that before she died.

There are plenty of artists they could do a Anniversary memorial too.

A few weeks before her death I remember her on TRL and seeing so many fans with pictures of her and I was surprised people loved her like that giving her the janet jackson treatment, but I did know people who were r&b/hip hop lovers, black and non black that loved her for her singles and Romeo Must Die though not like a megastar. I think those who look at all the legacy stuff are her diehard fans and the kids who were very young when she died and discovered her that way. I saw both cause I was in my late teens when she passed and we had all grown up with Aaliyah, and my sister was in elementary school and her classmates were playing Aaliyah's music everyday for about a year and dancing around to it cause they clearly discovered it then.

Dead on. Her die hard fans were kids when she died and now she's become a ''Icon'' to them. She's there Janet Jackson
