I've always liked LaBelle's voice and she's one of the few singers that can get all over-the-top on mic like that and I just eat it up.

I've never understood why people go so crazy over Joplin's voice, although from what I've seen of her as a person on documentaries and stuff, she seemed cool as hell, the type of person I'd have loved to have been friends with if I were around at that time. As a person she gets my respect - as a musician (and vocalist)...notsomuch.

I've always thought Nikka Costa was like, the new Janis Joplin, only this time she came back cuter and can actually sing her ass off .

Janis's voice isn't so bad. Consider the voices of Rod Stewart, Mick Jagger, Bonnie Tyler, T-Boz and a host of others. They all have that raspy sound and I think Janis qualifies as a raspy loud singer more than just a "howler".
