Why some of you hate on Patti LeBelle's screaming, yet make excuses for Janis Joplin's howling?!?

So far, there has been at least 2 threads in 2011 where I've seen some posts that made negative comments about Patti LeBelle either (soul) screaming OR oversinging on her own greatest hits.

But yet, almost no one in the entire org has absolute nothing negative to say about the late rock & roll HOFer Janis Joplin, a grown woman who used to sometimes sing like a freaking truck driver! disbelief

Why hate Patti for screaming but not hate Janis for howling?!?

I'm a fan of both of these ladies, but I believe that both of them scream too much. Although both can be very soulfull, they do tend to scream more that I would like.

I saw Patti live several years back and it was a great concert, but there were a few songs that she was over the top and I almost had to cover my ears the screeching was so bad. Unfortunately, I never got the chance to see Janis, but her music lives on.

Pretty much. lol

I've listen to some of Janis' live performances again on YouTube this week. The main thing that always turns me off from her as a vocalist is when she goes for the high notes. She is not bluesy at all. That woman used to get by by hollering in her songs all the time and her own fans back in the days AND even today will still make up excuse for this overrated artist. disbelief

Simply.. Black people cant get away with what white folks do..

Sorry for the bluntness but its true..

Patti herself on numerous occasions has said that she wasnt a crossover success because her voice and singing style was too black

She sounds great! Whether you or others like her or not doesn't matter to those of us that do.

I respect Janis Joplin as a female musical trailblazer , but think she was overrated as a blues-rock singer howling or not. Bonnie Raitt is way better.

In other words, Patti didn't settle down a bit like Aretha, Chaka, & Tina and tried to get crossover-pop success sometimes.

Well I said f*** a crossover. There was never anything wrong with Patti's vocals. Even on a synth-driven track like THIS following 80's classic, she was too soulful for dance-pop:

I think Grace Slick was better than Janis! And keep in mind that Grace (lead vocalist for Jefferson Airplane) & Janis came from the same generation.

I don't know, I really, really can't stand to hear Janis 'singing' at all. She makes my ears bleed.

We've all heard male rockers screaming thru their songs but I very seldom hear any negative feedback about it coming from anyone. It's really not a big deal. Everyone has their own singing style. Screaming & shouting is part of the history of Soul music. Like I said earlier, I'll take Patti's soul-shouting any day over Beyonce's watered-down, substance-less Dance vocals. That's just my personal preference. I hate generic, forgettable singers like Beyonce and Lady Ga Ga. Although she may go a bit overboard at times, I love singers like Patti, who can move me and touch my soul.

Because she is dead! If Janis was still living the internets and the org would be eating her for breakfast lunch and howling dinner.

So when exactly did I ever needed your permission to start a thread about anything or anyone? neutral

For someone who doesn't miss being a mod, you sure have been kind of questionablely critical of how orgers express themselves as of late.

True. I like both ladies, I'm not sure why there has to be either or. shrug

The screaming, hoppin' howlin, over singing, shouting is very much apart of the African-American community experience..... call and response. So what's the big deal? If you don't like either woman fine, if you like both that's fine too. If you don't give a rats tale about either.... lol

Did I say you had to have permission? My point is, you create an arguement out of thin air based on zero facts just to stir up sh*t and you expect people not to call you on in?

Who here craps on Patti Labelle *and* praises Janis Joplin? Provide us with a quote---a link. Something. And I don't give a sh*t how you express yourself but don't make up sh*t and then expect not be called on it. shrug

Well thank you for prejudging me like you think you know what inside my heart AND mind. rolleyes

Everyone else has had their fun taking the piss out of T-Boz, Janet, Gaga, and (surprisingly) even Patti LeBelle, and you might have never told any of those thread starters a damn thing about their motives at all. So excuse me for wondering if I was suppose to ask you for your final approvable in creating a thread about Janis & Patti.
