I dig Max. He's got one of the best male voices -- if not the best -- of his generation, and his compositions suggest he spends more than the apparently typical 10 minutes thinking of dollar store analogies to sex and women's bodies. His stuff seems thoughtful and sincere. I own it all.
That said, few of his projects move me beyond being exceptionally good background music. There are no "hooks" that'd have me craving to revisit or singing his stuff in my head all day. I'd never want him to sell out to become a hitmeister, but it'd be cool to see him paired with a producer or two who could help churn out something that'd stop a room full of people cold.
But I also think he copies Prince too much in his per4mances crawling on the stage and the splits.
Splits? Are you serious? You do realize that the splits in performances were LONG before Prince, right? Soul Train in the 70s - the split was a VERY COMMON move. James...before James Brown, Sam Cooke; before Sam...Cab Calloway...I could rattle off a long list...
How are you just gonna give Prince credit for the splits like that? Are you serious?
I'm gonna leave that alone. Maxwell grew up on James, too. We all know where Prince got it from.
As to Maxwell, dude is in a class of his own. He is this generation's Maxwell. I like most of his work. Dude has a very smooth voice and I disagree that he is imitating Prince, especially when it comes to falsetto. Prince screams and belts a lot whereas Maxwell glides from note to note. I've said many times on here, when it comes to falsetto, I'd rather listen to Maxwell than to Prince as a singer.

I think I agree with you there.
Sorry! Maxwell can't sing falsetto very long without his tonsils falling out.Yes James was ummatched in splits> But no other artist since Prince was doing splits like that.
will ALWAYS think of like a "ACT OF GOD"! N another realm. mean of all people who might of been aliens or angels.if found out that wasn't of this earth, would not have been that surprised. R.I.P.

Prince doesn't own the splits, man. You seem a bit obsessed. Prince didn't popularize the split like MJ popularized the moonwalk. Do you even watch other artists? You seem to be in some kind of Prince bubble.
AndI'm going to ignore that first comment seeing as how I have seen Max on tour and he has no problems singing falsetto. IMO, he has a much better voice than Prince.

I've studied many other artist besides Prince. Been to hundreds of other artist concerts. Yes! Prince is my favorite. I don't deny Maxwell voice is good. I already said he has the best male singing voice in his generation. Don't try to make me out to ignore other artist talent. Just because I admire Prince's. Was just pointing out that he stole Prince's moves. Just like every other dancing artist that comes out stills MJ's moves.

And I am pointing out to you that THE SPLIT IS NOT PRINCE'S MOVE.
There is too much evidence of this.
I guess the Berry Bros. built a time machine and went into the future and stole Prince's moves, too? Seriously. Give it a rest. You're wrong on this. I have proved it.

U haven't proved anything brotha. I never said Prince was the only artist in history that did the splits. I just said when he started doing it. That Maxwell stole some of Prince's movements. That is all. Splits are done in different ways. U are totally missing the point. U the one acting obsessive with something that is not that big a deal. Argue with Maxwell manager about it...I'm done..See ya!

I thoroughly enjoyed 'BLACKsummers'night'. But for some reason I never paid much attention to him in years past. Don't know if I changed or he changed. Perhaps at some point I will give his previous albums a listen.
I share this very same sentiment. I still haven't listened to any of his other
albums yet either, but I feel like I might be missing something when I read all

If anything, you are DEFINITELY missing this:
Then go on the explore the others:
MTV Unplugged
Embrya
Now
I will forever love and miss you...my sweet Prince.

Lol......Mj's moves came from Fosse, James Brown, Jeffrey Daniels and Jackie Wilson.
I know everything is recycled. Prince & MJ got some of ther moves from James Brown. Maxwell,D'angelo & Miguel get some of there moves from Prince. Its nothing wrong with channeling ur idols, as long as U make it unique & not copy them. Like Usher, Ne-Yo who copy MJ step by step. I never think of James brown when I use to see Prince do the splits. But when I see Maxwell do them I think of Prince It doesn't take away from Maxwell talent. Whose singing voice I think is the most soullful of his generation..

Right. There is a DIFFERENCE between straightup swaggerjacking versus a clear inspiration. Michael was inspired by all those people but he came up with his OWN moves as well. When you look at him you dont think of damn Michael is straighup copying James Brown like you would with Chris Brown or Usher who clearly based their entire careers off of impersonating Michael.

YOU think of Prince. Not everyone else does. I think of James and several other people when I see that style of split. Damn near every dude on Soul Train did that exact same style of split when coming down the Soul Train line - before Prince ever did it on camera. It didn't originte from Prince and Prince didn't "put his own spin" on that split. Its about exposure and what you are exposed to and when.
