Maxwell: Your Thoughts on Him...

I'm listening to Maxwell now and was just wondering what the Purple Hippies think of him. Any thoughts? smile

Well, since you asked, I really like his music. Seems like every since he cut his hair(it still looks great) we've seen another side of his music. Talk about get better with time gummybear And yes, it would be such a delight for him to share a stage with Prince. Yes, I said it. wink

He can sing, and some of his songs are really good.

I like his music and his style. His first cd "Urban Hang Suite" is a classic - there's not a skip in the bunch for me. There's a nice mix of funk and soul/r&b. "Welcome" is EXTREMELY funky!!! I don't think he'll be able to top it.

Here's the link for "Welcome" - http://www.youtube.com/wa...GsmCDnSaSM

I think he is this generations Marvin Gaye. But I also think he copies Prince too much in his per4mances crawling on the stage and the splits. But his voice is the most soulful of his generation. He is a little too soft to have male fans. But the women love him. He has a good spirit about him. But he needs to show a darker side to him. Prince has showed many sides to his self in music. Sorry for comparing him to Prince. But that is why i joined this site & he does copy him."Urban Hang Suite" is a classic & made many babies..It is the go to cd to start the mood.

eye will ALWAYS think of prince like a "ACT OF GOD"! N another realm. eye mean of all people who might of been aliens or angels.if found out that prince wasn't of this earth, eye would not have been that surprised. R.I.P. prince

Hey there, thanks for the comments. I guess I never really saw Maxwell as copying Prince, but more like Marvin Gaye or Sam Cooke. I guess I just never really thought he was copying Prince (say, the way that Lenny Kravtiz does). Maxwell doesn't pass off as eccentric and edgy as Prince is. I think Maxwell is good at changing his sound while keeping quality which is a rarity these days, I think.

I thoroughly enjoyed 'BLACKsummers'night'. But for some reason I never paid much attention to him in years past. Don't know if I changed or he changed. Perhaps at some point I will give his previous albums a listen.

He crawls around on stage biggrin I've seen him perform a couple of times and he did not grace us with that!! I believe there were a couple of splits though biggrin. I never thought he was trying to imitate Prince.

I agree with your comment about his spirit. He's definitely a kind and gentle soul.

P.S. it's after midnight on the east coast of the USA and I'm blogging about Maxwell and R.Kelly!!! Can you guess what I don't have in my life???? biggrin

Maxwell copies some of Prince"s stage moves. Also he copies his mysteriousness, I think Maxwell was eccentric when he first came out. Now he has toned it down....

He crawled @ 2 different tours I attended of his years ago......It was exactly like Prince does with the draggin of his whole body with his hands. Like Prince did chasing after Cat in the Sign "0" the Times movie. I said to myself could he come up with something else more unique. But overall they were good shows..

Til The Cops Come Knockin' was the first time I saw him. I remember thinking, who is this neosoul Lenny Kravitz looking mofo?! But I dug the groove. Then after I heard Acsension, I was hooked! Reunion was a standout on that album too.

I was going to say something similar.

It's not that I don't think he's talented; I just don't dig his music that much. shrug

I saw him last summer with Jill Scott- she was the reason I went. I found myself checking the time and looking around during his set.

I had his first album, but bought the rest prior to the show to "get ready" (I wanted to at least know the songs). Now I often skip some of them if they shuffle through. boxed

Maxwell is great and I love all his music. I own all of his albums and even though I consider Embrya and Now to be the weak links...they still feature a few songs on there that are gems. The man can still sing and knows how to put on a live show. I disagree strongly about the bit of him allegedly copying Prince's moves...confuse When I saw him live two years ago, he didn't represent nor remind me of anything Prince does live. I do agree however that he does have a kind soul and seems to be a sincere and kind gentleman. He seems to be extremely sensitive as well...like a sexy, warm teddy bear. biggrin

I will forever love and miss you...my sweet Prince.

I like him alot. I am glad he is back and is really scared he will up and disappear for years on end again. His last album was cool, it didnt give me quite the exact funk I needed but I will be right behind him when he puts out the next cd.

His last album was great. I saw the BLACKSUMMERSNIGHT show which was my second MAXWELL concert. The man is just LIVE. His band is tight. People dont perform or have showmanship like that anymore.

I am hoping that his continuation of BlackSummersNight is more along the lines of EMBRYA.. Which was my favorite RECORD of his. Plus the VH1 storytellers show should be put on CD.. although I already got the MP3s bumping on my IPHONE

I agree. The only similarity to Prince for me is the sensuality in his lyrics and delivery....yea when he first came out he was a little wilder but I dont think he "copied him" either. There is a difference between having an influence and straight up swagger-jacking someone....And I think he is an excellent showman.

Maxwell has come in2 his own now. I said in his earlier tours he has copied Prince moves. But now as an established artist he has his own style. But I agree with some, I find him kinda boring. Can't really listen to his albums all the way through without falling asleep. Its just good for setting a sex mood. Then turn it off.
