Rapper 50 Cent Sets Sales Record with 'Get Rich'
By Steve Gorman

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Hard-core rapper 50 Cent, the bullet-ridden ex-crack dealer signed last year by Eminem (news - web sites), has made good on his vow to "Get Rich or Die Tryin"' -- the title of his blockbuster major-label debut.

The highly anticipated album sold a record 872,000 copies its first week in release to enter the pop charts at No. 1 as the music industry's first smash hit of the year, according to album sales tracker Nielsen SoundScan.

Issued on Interscope Records' Aftermath imprint, 50 Cent's launch ranks as the biggest opening week for a major-label debut by any recording artist in the SoundScan era.

Rapper Snoop Dogg's "Doggystyle" held the previous record, selling 803,000 copies its first week in November 1993, months after his arrest in connection with a drive-by slaying. Snoop ultimately was cleared of all charges.

"Get Rich" also marked the biggest bow for any album since country pop diva Shania Twain (news)'s "Up! logged first-week sales of 874,000 units last November. Eminem had the No. 1 opening of 2002 with 1.3 million copies of "The Eminem Show," which remains on the charts at No. 19 this week.

Meanwhile, 50 Cent's independent release, "Guess Who's Back?," has tallied sales of 227,000 copies since it was issued in May and ranked No. 45 on the charts for the week ended Feb. 9, according to SoundScan.

The critically lauded "Get Rich or Die Tryin"' supplanted the Dixie Chicks at the top of the charts, knocking the country pop trio to No. 2. Their album, "Home," sold 114,00 copies last week to raise its cumulative total to nearly 4.3 million units since late last summer.

Only two other artists cracked sales of 100,000 last week -- Kid Rock at No. 3 with "Cocky" and jazz vocalist Norah Jones (news) at No. 4 with "Come Away With Me." Pop ingenue Avril Lavigne (news) rounded out the top five with "Let Go."

The only other new release to make the top 10 last week was "The Dreamer," from country singer Blake Shelton (news), which opened at No. 8 with nearly 77,000 copies sold.

HARD-FOUGHT TRIUMPH

The success of "Get Rich or Die Tryin"' marks a hard-fought triumph for 50 Cent, who was born Curtis Jackson and raised in the rough Southside Jamaica neighborhood of New York City's Queens borough by his grandmother after his mother died and his father left home.

His early years hustling crack cocaine landed Curtis in prison more than once before he turned to rap and eventually caught the attention of Jam Master Jay, the pioneering Run-D.M.C. DJ, who served as 50's mentor and promoter until his shooting death last year.

Fifty scored a hit with the single "How to Rob," but his initial brush with crossover success was thwarted by an attempt on his life just as Columbia Records was about to release what would have been his major-label debut, "Power of the Dollar." In May 2000, an assailant with a 9mm pistol shot the rapper nine times as he sat in a car.

He survived the attack but parted company with Columbia after the label shelved "Power of the Dollar," and 50 returned to the rap underground. He later gained notice from Eminem, who signed 50 to a reported seven-figure joint deal with Interscope's Shady and Aftermath imprints, the labels respectively owned by Eminem himself and his mentor, Dr. Dre.

Sizable crossover hits followed with "Wanksta," which appeared on the soundtrack to the Eminem movie "8 Mile," and "In da Club," the Dre-produced lead single from "Get Rich." The new album also contains two bonus tracks from the never-released "Power of the Dollar."

Dr.Dre Is The Quincy Jones of Rap Producers has that Midas Touch for Hits&Success. The Street Buzz was there&also 50 Cent with His Mike Tyson Swagger&Presentation along with Eminem from the Mid-West&Dr.Dre from The West Coast knocked out all Places almost.50 Cent is Country as well it all works catchy Songs&Hooks Right Name Window Dressing Being Associated with Dre&Eminem go Along Way.Timing was Right&this also Shuts up the Industry that wants to Blame there Dead Relatives for why the Industry is in the Toliet&almost FLushed.Smart Marketing with dropping the Album early same practice that Eminem did last year.50 Cent had a Strong Street Buzz a Real Beef with Irv Gotti&Murder Inc..&Interscope shows you how a Label can Blow Up a Act the Right Way.MJ&Prince Combined already did these Numbers but there was No SoundScan back then but that's a whole different story.MJ did it 4 times at least&sadly it wasn't counted.Prince did it a couple of times&Stevie Wonder did it once as well.Dre is always on a Record when it breaks Records.no surprise at all.I dug that 50 Cent cut a couple Years back that made fun of Industry Acts&He said he was gonna Rob them.but lets be real:50 Cent is No Snoop Dogg type of Artist&persona but then again Sadly Snoop isn't anymore but the key will be to see how 50 Cents emerges in Years to Come.remember Dre tried this with Xzibt&It still hasn't come out right.

I'm very picky when it comes 2 music, I hardly listen 2 the radio anymore cuz most of is it wack anyway, but I think 50 cents is a good rap artist that I ain't heard in a long while... I mean he ain't fake like some of these so called rappers such as Nelly and Jarule, I wish 50 cents all the success in the world...

And the thing about Prince is Micheal Jackson is.... they both have been 2 the top, ruled it during most of the eighties it's time 2 let some new cats come along and do the same..... I'm sure pretty sure if Prince wanted 2 have a #1 hit on the radio he could, but as you can see Prince has taken his music in2 a new direction is beyond all that now and that's what I respect about him..... as 4 Micheal Jackson, the media is trying 2 defame him anyways, Micheal Jackson has enough grammy's for him and his grand kids smile You can only b king 4 so long until it's time 2 crown another king ..... so that's how that story goes

There's nothing 'special' about 50 Cent, it looks the media wants someone to latch onto, just to bring on new faces...what they're doing to him, is the same shi* they could've done to Fabolus, Biggie, or some other rapper if they wanted to bring them up the way he's in all our faces, he's probably a Wankster himself, he's okay though, but please...not for all that.
