For you Jazz types: Colin Stetson

I got wind not long ago of Montreal-based bass saxophonist and Arcade Fire touring band member Colin Stetson. A particularly percussive player and one of the more celebrated circular breathers of late, he may be worthy of your attention if you're into free and experimental composition. The first two installments of his planned New History Warfare trilogy are out, and they're darned interesting. NHW Vol. 2: Judges is a 2011 Polaris Music Prize (for the best Canadian full-length album) nominee.

Do check him out.

biggrin That's pretty wild! Thanks!

Funny that you posted this --I've been looking at Bass Clarinets lately, missing my old band days in high school--and I was kinda wondering about the bass saxophone, since I used to see guys in ensembles playing baritone, but never saw anyone with a bass sax...so this is pretty kool to hear!!!

I'm glad you're interested. I hope you check out his stuff and dig it.

I played alto sax in junior high, and one of my biggest regrets is that I didn't stick with it. I've crossed paths with a few bari players, but I don't personally know any bass players. It can be a really intimidating instrument, right? First of all, it's huge! And the sound it produces can be downright scary at times.

I sure wouldn't be the one that has to carry that thing, lol but I do dig that sound!
