Can't pass by this thread without mentioning one of my heros, Miss Mary Lou Williams.

^^^
I read briefly about her I mean, Miss Calloway, didn't she back up Billie Holiday in some engagement back in the late 30s? I'm sure I read that somewhere.

yes she did. Ms. Calloway was the first woman music director of an all male big band and Louis Armstrong played as a sideman in her first recording.
I'll have more to say about this later: over the weekend I attened a lecture at the California African American Museum about Jazz / Swing Big Bands and their history with the Apollo Theater. Ms. Calloway was talked about . . .

Dorothy Donegan (1922 - (d) 1998) Brilliant. Ms Donegan never got her due... wasn't taken very seriously because some saw her as a "flashy player". Whatever that means.....
Now, if you thought I wasn't gonna post Vaughan playing the piano.....

I discovered her by listening to this album...

Fantastic compilation if you're interested in the R&B's infant stage during the War years. All of the performers in this album are women btw.
Ok,,,,

I can't find footages of this woman. But I've mentioned her in one of my conversations with Miss Trina in the past.
Her name is Margaret "Queenie" Johnson, a mystery I've yet to solve and possessed one of the MOST beautiful piano playing that was ever caught on record.
You can hear her playing away in these songs....
As much as I ADORE Lady Day, I have to admit, Miss Johnson's playing added the charm that first attracted me to these songs in the first place.

I'm sorry, the four songs I mentioned are not instrumentals

One of my first thoughts, too!

Harle it's kinda hard to find many of the early women instrumentalist who didn't sing, ain't it? It was like they had to... either to get their foot in the door so they could play their respective instruments. "She sings and yeah she plays.....". I could list a couple of ladies band leaders who composed, played but they sung too. So yeah I understand.
P.S. I have to lay on the floor when I listen to Ms. Redd, my daddy had such a crush on her.

You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit who’s never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton
