HIStory vs. Velvet Rope

Which album do you like better as a whole and why? Each one was a personal album for Michael and Janet.

As a whole, I think I like Velvet Rope better, I was just so crazy about Janet during that era and it defines an important part of my teen years, and the tour was the first concert I'd been to. I love the album start to finish, all the music on it and have related to it lyrically at different times in my life. The remixes are good too. I was crazy about her red hair and tattoos as well

As for HIStory, I do love it too start to finish. It's not my favourite MJ album, but I do love it and played it so much too for years, though now I appreciate it for the lyrics mostly and for my favourite standouts on the album like Earth Song, 2Bad, Come Together, TDCAU, and since the death, Smile. I love the lyrics on this one too and could relate to it too when angry and sad and what not, but I guess the past 2 years have been MJ overload for me that I find it easier to listen to Janet for now so I'm less sad and upset.

Yeah I do agree HIStory contains some creative work, some of which is ahead of it's time and pleasing to the ears. I thought the videos from the era were so futuristic and powerful too and it was HIStory era that grabbed me

Yall crazy as hell... VR is one of Janets BEST but it is NO WHERE NEAR SPETACULAR or on the level of They Dont Really Care About Us, Stranger in Moscow, LITTLE SUSIE, Come Together, You Are Not Alone, Money, 2 BAD etc... just to many classics and the lyrical content and themes are just off the chart compared to VR and I think are much MORE personal

History wins... their is nothing to discuss

I'm not saying HIStory has no classics. I already said why I love it and ya'll already know I'm a huge MJ fan. I just empathize very well with Janet on VR. Both MJ and Janet were humble and truthful about their life experiences on both projects and those were the times I was really really getting into them.

HIStory was my first MJ album given to me as a gift from my friend cause no one would buy an album that expensive for me though I wanted it so bad, and of course I was in love with both discs start to finish. I bought tons of albums that summer, though they were good, I barely liked anything start to finish like I did and still do with Michael and Janet.

Yes on this subject matter regarding VR being compared to History. Its beyond amusing exactly

They shouldnt even be compared. VR is good BUT NO WHERE ON THE same level, breath, creativity, lyrical content, overall production, classic material, impact, vocals as History.

Yea yall crazy as a mofo or smoking to much either or lol

I agree Timmy, and find nothing wrong with the question since they are both from almost the same time and are on similar subject matter, and they are from the same family. Just wanted to know which one fans prefer of the two. This is not to put down one person's artistry and talent over the other at all, though I do agree no one does it like MJ.

To be honest, both albums are great. But I think had Michael did things his way rather than Sony putting the hits set in there, then it would've eclipsed it, especially with some of the Blood on the Dance Floor songs like Morphine and Is It Scary.

Was a massive fan of Velvet Rope when it came out - quite innovative and stretching of Janet's sound and more personal subject matter.

HIStory is Michael's most personal and shows artistic growth as well.

Tough call - I do tend to listen to HIStory more often than VR so I will have to go with HIStory.

Both are stellar albums though.

She's asking which album u prefer. To each their own. There's nothing wrong with some people enjoying Janet's album more than HIStory.

Unholyalliance

I remember wearing down my Velvet Rope cd when I was younger. Recently I acquired it again, but now I have hard time listening to it. I don't know what it is... Outside of a few tracks...I just can't anymore. I can't tell if it's Janet's voice or the tracks themselves. I mostly stick to Rhythm Nation and I really hated janet. so I just stick to If.

Otoh I listen to HIStory a lot even though I didn't listen to it as much when I was younger as it took a little more time to grow on me. I guess, to me it seems to be a little more varied. Like, the songs sound varied and different from each other. Like, Little Susie doesn't sound anything like Tabloid Junkie in terms of singing or anything and I really like that.

There is nothing wrong with that even though technically History is a much better album artistically as well as vocally and I just thought I point that out. lol I am sorry but there is just no way I am going to sit back and not mention this in a VR and History comparision regardless of preference.

Morphine would have been great on HIStory, but BOTDF was like cutting deeper into what he had to say on the album, like a continuation to those who chose to buy it, but I wouldn't change a thing anyways.

I think I enjoy more songs on "Velvet Rope", but at the same time for as good as that album is, there isn't one song on "Velvet Rope" to me that is on the level of "Stranger In Moscow" imo. That song is a masterpiece and VR doesn't have any song that is on that level, not to me anyway, but overall I'd say I enjoy VR more. It's Janet's most personal and introspective album to date. I really liked the direction musically she took with it.

I agree with this.

with songs like Stranger In Moscow, Earth Song, They Don't Care About Us; HIStory definitely had more songs that stand out. However, it gets clumped together with other less than stellar songs. Velvet Rope flows much stronger for me.

Both albums are great though.
