Chaka Khan hasn’t been paying the rent on her New Jersey home and now she’s facing legal action over her missed payments.

According to reports the singer and her sister Tammy McCrary signs a contract to lease a mansion in Watchung for two weeks during June but failed to pay for their time at the property.

Landlord Maryse Selit alleges that the R&B star left town after the first week and didn’t pay her full bill as she had promised. Selit claims they lost out on other business because of the situation, telling the National Enquirer:

“Chaka and her entourage stayed only one week, but I’m stuck for two. I told them I had someone who was willing to pay rent for the entire two weeks.”

“I know I can sue them, but I was trying to settle this the easiest way possible. Now they’re acting like I don’t exist.”

Khan’s people have not yet commented on the situation.

As far as I'm concerned Chaka doesn't owe them shit! If you reserve a hotel room for two weeks and check out a week early, you're not expected to pay for the second week. Chaka paid for the time she there. Some rentals require deposits so this landlord heffa is not financially put out and can easily rent the home and recoup whatever she thinks she lost.

While she still maintains a residence in Europe, she mostly resides in California.

The story came from the Inquisiter, not the Enquirer. Aren't they two separate entities?

While I certainly hope the story is not true, like a couple of people said on the Inquisiter messageboard, Chaka hasn't been all that relevant in years. If they were going to make up a story about someone, I doubt if Chaka would have been one of their choices.

If she signed a contract (lease), she's financially responsible for the full two weeks. it doesnt matter if she stayed there two weeks or two hours. A lease is a legally binding contract and you can't alter it just because you changed your mind.

If she signed a contract (lease), she's financially responsible for the full two weeks. it doesnt matter if she stayed there two weeks or two hours. A lease is a legally binding contract and you can't alter it just because you changed your mind.

But the circumstances of the lease changed. I mean what if the place burned down and was inhabitable. Chaka would still have to pay for a place that didn't exist? Obviously Chaka had no reason to continue living there so quite naturally she doesn't want to pay for a place where she didn't stay.

There's got to be some exceptions to this rule or else a lot of renters/leasers may find themselves in hot water. I love that phrase "in hot water".

But, it didn't burn down. She just changed her mind. It's like you and I signing a six month lease to rent a house. We stay there for 3 months, pay 3 months worth of rent and then decide that we don't want to stay there anymore b/c we found a fancier place somewhere else so we don't owe for the final 3 months of the rent. WRONG! You are entitled to leave early, if you like. But, legally, you are obligated to pay 6 months worth of rent. If you're luckey, the Landlord will charge you a hefty early termination fee and not charge you for the full lease. But, bottom line, if you change your mind, that does not change the contract. If you want to change the contract, you must get it in writing.

I've been watching Judge shows since I was a little kid, so I know how to keep myself out of pickles such as this.
