the rolling stones...hmmm....they are rated as the 2nd most critically acclaimed act of the last 50 years at acclaimedmusic.net...only the beatles are more highly thought of but..i have to be honest...i have always thought they were overrated....going by their hit singles...i have yet to make it through one of their albums...i listened to most of exile on main street but i couldnt see what the fuss was about.....i have always thought the beatles were head and shoulders above them..but i am open to having my mind changed on this..

so...what rolling stones album should i sit down and listen to all the way through ?...what is their most brilliant work in your opinion ?...dont get me wrong....i DO like a lot of their singles so there is a chance i could be convinced they deserve such high praise...

I like The Stones... I don't own any records and I'm not a huge fan, but I like them--same with AC/DC and countless other veteran acts.

I have a hard to time labeling these veteran acts as overrated. They've obviously hit on something that has resonated with millions of people and generation after generation. They've stood the test of time.

And, I do like many of the songs...even some of their 80's and 90's stuff. When you think about the things that these artists achieved musically and as songwriters since the primitive 60's, it kinda' makes you appreciate their work more. For me, anyway. I think they were highly influential and made a huge impact.

If you're not fussed but want an intro get this.

My own personal tastes are 68 through 75 and not alot since but this is a great compilation.

Yes they are...to me at least. They always sound the same. It's probably has to do with the time they became famous.

I didn't grow up with The Beatles either, but i can see the magic there. Never saw it with The Stones.

At the end, they only had one good track...Miss you....that's it.

I'll take Exile in Guyville over mainstreet anyday.

Not in my opinion. Their catalogue of work is phenomenal! Many songs are downright perfect.

Not overrated. Try Sticky Fingers. If you don't like that album, give up, you aren't going to be into them. Going by just the hits you hear on radio is a bad thing. They have album cuts that are way cooler than the radio songs. "Moonlight Mile"!!!

I think you cannot really appreciate the true "weight" of an artist/s unless you were there in the time they were coming to prominence.

If you don't "get" the significance of the Stones by tuning in to what would be just "oldies" to you, I fully understand. It's an issue of context.

Take it from a 62 year old who came of age with the Beatles and the Stones. Although they are two different bands they were both a major part of the times- the emergence of rock and roll beyond the Elvis, Buddy Holly, Jerry Lee Lewis years and the British Invasion.

For one my age you cannot really separate the Beatles and the Stones from each other in that they were like yin and yang on the musical landscape back in the day; the clean cut mop tops at one end of the spectrum and the dangerous raggedy crew at the other end.

For the longest time my collection ended with Undercover. I eventually did get Dirty Work and Steel Wheels but was left unimpressed enough to not bother with anything after them. Are Voodoo Lounge and Bridges to Babylon worth a listen or are there just a few decent tracks on them? I recall that A Bigger Bang got great reviews but whatever the lead single was did not leave much of an impression on me.

I don't think they are doing themselves any favours by making hour long albums at this stage in their career. It would probably be much easier for them to crank out a solid ten track/forty minute album.

Voodoo Lounge was the REAL return to form. Not a masterpiece, but still their best album since Tattoo You. Definitely worth owning. 3,5/5

anyway, If I were you, and considering that Bridges is nothing special, I would burn the best of Voodoo Lounge (erase the filler: SweetHearts Together, Suck on the Jugular, awful tracks) and add the best of Bridges (Flip the Switch, Lowdown, Out of Control, Saint of Me and the 3 Keith tracks: Yo Don't Have to Mean It, Thief in the Night, and How Can I Stop). Anybody Seen My Baby is not necessary since you have it already in Forty Licks...

that would be a solid 94-98 Stones Cd...

but Bigger Bang is certainly worth owning...

Out of 12, 500+ track in my Itunes collection the Stones have managed to place one song. 'Paint it Black.'

I have never liked the Stones. I listened to their singles in the 70's and liked a couple but nothing about them has ever really grabbed me.

If I have listened to one of their albums in its entirety, it didn't leave a great impression.

I don't care enough to actually hate them, I just don't listen.
