I heard on a Madonna forum years ago from a fan that in their yearbook back then, they called True Blue a flop for selling 1 million less than Like a Virgin in the US, blasphemy!

This is the earliest Madonna era I remember when I was 3 years old that made me into a fan. Papa Don't Preach was the song I loved and I have memories of my cousin dancing to it and the tape when I visited, and also discovered Madonna videos from the eras before it that I had on tape. I knew Live To Tell as well and liked her dress, but I didn't appreciate slow Madonna yet, I liked fast Madonna songs. I had it on cassette for years though not at the time though I did get the Like a Virgin album and a poster for my room, but I didn't own it on CD until the remasters were released. Best tracks are:

White Heat

Where's The Party

Open Your Heart

Papa Don't Preach

La Isla Bonita

True Blue

[Edited 7/2/11 23:27pm]

I thought "True Blue" was her biggest selling studio album to date. It was anything but a flop.

Not my favorite album, but its my favorite album artwork. I think Like A Virgin and Like A Prayer are both better albums, song for song.

Like a Prayer? definitely, obviously...

but, Like a Vigin? confuse

Material Girl vs Papa Don't Preach = Draw

Angel vs Open Your Heart = Draw

Like a Virgin vs White Heat

Over and Over vs Where's The Party

Love Don't Live Here Anymore vs Live to Tell

Dress You Up vs True Blue

Shoo-Bee-Doo vs La Isla Bonita (oh lawd, this one was easy)

Pretender vs Jimmy Jimmy

Stay vs Love Makes the World Go Round (cheesier, but more enjoyable)

I'd say that TB is the better album overall...

^^ I have the same opinion about LAV and True Blue: the singles are fantastic, but the other songs are just 'OK'.It wasn't until LAP that Madonna began to make full, complete albums where even the non-singles were interesting.

"Jimmy Jimmy" and "Loves Makes the World Go Round"? Two of her worst songs ever. No way are they better than "Pretender" and "Stay." I also think "Over and Over" earns a draw, which gives a huge edge to LAV. And that's without "Into the Groove"...

Her first album is okay but I don't think it's the masterpiece that so many other fans think it is lol

"Spotlight" certainly is an outtake from this album.I think it should have appeared on the album instead of "Jimmy,Jimmy" which nobody likes, lol.

The only reason why Spotlight didn't make it on the True Blue album is because it sounds like a sequel to Where's The Party.

the "why oh why oh why oh why oh why oh why oh whyyyyyy" part is clearly better than "He's a Pretendaaaa! lol lol

and LMTWGR is a CLASSIC, Live Aid anyone? cool

and Where's the Party could have been, easily, the sixth single (hit), so O&O fails...

TB all the way...

I think Spotlight and Who's That Girl sound kind of girly though the sound is similar to the album, so I understand why they didn't make it, but I love them so much! I bought the Holiday Collection and You Can Dance so I could own them. I saw the Papa Don't Preach record recently, and I'm considering buying it cause of the poster that comes with it, it's rare and iconic, and when I redo my room soon, I've decided I want one Madonna pic, but I want it to be something iconic, and definitely from the 80's, one from one of the first 3 album eras.

"Live to Tell" was probably her breakthrough as a "mature" artist. Still love it to this day. The singles are all great, but too much filler makes this easily her worst album of the '80s.

Agree.

La Isla Bonita has aged well, I know so many people who love this song still. The look with the red dress is one of her best.

It really wasn't a flop. Like I said, 1 million less in the US. Like a Virgin sold 10 million and True Blue 9 million. Worldwide, it was 25 million or something like that.
