I'll just share a little. I remember when my son and his friend filmed/interviewed her some time ago to promote her for Sean Combs, when she performed in a club in NYC, when Sean first signed her. I first heard of her when she was with Outkast, and read that she helped write a couple of songs for the "Idlewild" movie. She was pretty much an independent artist promoting herself on myspace, and her following grew from there. I also remember when she was singing backup when Andre/Outkast was either on Jay Leno or Letterman. Can't remember which late night show it was, but it was around the time "Idlewild" was out.

The reason I was asking, because Sean Combs has been known to screw over his artists; as far as I knew. Creativity is one thing, but distribution and promotion is another.

Not denying what you may know about that, just saying, that she pretty much is in control of her own creativity with her style of music. [Edited 6/28/11 8:19am]

Let's pray that that isn't the case. His track record is horrible. It's a wonder that anyone would still seriously consider signing with him. His old roster reads like an obituary of past careers.

Janelle could give a fuck about Puffy Bitch. Puffy Bitch only signed her but she doesn't surround herself with his people. I can actually see her leaving the label in a few years but as far as the music goes, he has no control over what she releases and that's good because someone like Puffy shouldn't fuck around with musical talent like that.

Fair play if people like Janelle after the glastonbury gig, there was a lot of trash at that festival from what I hear, U2 were lame according to a lot of reports, and the sound on beyonce was appauling so the band was nowhere.
Personally I love janelle, but I was dissapointed by the tracks she selected to perform, my least favourite on the album apart from tightrope. I think there is a lot of better stuff on that album which is more diverse and would have been a better showcase for her.
I hope she stay well away from Prince though, next she'll be a JW and that will be the end of that.
Someone said he's teaching her an instrument.... that sounds made up, and also dropped her in my estimations slightly as I presumed all the hype about her was becuase she was a singer song writer, and assumed she'd performed most of the stuff on her album already...

Exactly. Can't find the interview where I read that was one of her concerns prior to signing, but I remember reading that she let him know she wanted to maintain control over her music, i.e, creativity/what's released, etc.). [Edited 6/28/11 12:03pm]

a very sad realisation has hit me, Janelle is not going to be the new Prince, it is a very sad moment for me, but it is reality...I have always looked for the new Prince, but i guess I should accept that people like P only pop up every few centuries rather than decades...it is not to take anything away from Janelle, she is the breathe of fresh air we need in music, and i think she will be an international star but she is not the new Prince If it were not for insanity, I would be sane.

Even if she was to leave Bad Boy she'd be fine. Most never associated her with him or his label anyway. She's done a good job of branding herself without him. I'm sure the majors would love to partner with her and her imprint, Wondaland Arts Society. She's one of the most promising artist out there. Didn't Big Boi play a role too with The ArchAndroid?

Her next album is going to be the one to watch. With all the hype surrounding her current platter, anticipation will be bigger than the Titanic. The next album will be put under huge scrutiny. She will be sucked in, chewed to fuck then spat out. I personally think she will pull it off and come through victorious.
Be nice to one day see an official release of The Audition too.

Great performance.
Though I am not a Janelle fan (yet) I think she is talented and cute as a button. She is so young that who knows what she has in her going forward. But in this clip she is cool as hell.

That was a very energetic performance posted. I really like her energy and she is a talented singer. Unfortunately, I can't remember one word she sang. Most of her material seems about as memorable as Chinese arithmetic. Its energetic but vague as hell and not melodic at all. I really think she has something going on but she needs to focus. I hope some of Bruno Mars' melodic sense rubs off on her after being on tour with him. Once she learns to harness a hook and ride it, she will be a force to be reckoned with.

I love her and played her cd out, and also believe in her talent and what she has to offer. HOWEVER I do agree that the performance posted, though energic, lacked originality and she's becoming repetitive to me because I've seen her live twice. I want her true self to shine and I look forward to seeing more originality and freshness from her performances.
Bring it on Janelle, I know you got it in you gurl! [Edited 6/28/11 17:05pm]

Janelle was brilliant at Glastonbury. Need to get her last album, I dont have any of her stuff! Janella is the future of music, where it will go back to be more gritter imo.
There was only a handful of acts that I thought were good and none of them were the headliners, acts like; Jimmy Cliff, Aloe Blacc, Chemical Brothers and some others. There was only 2 acts that were amazing to me at Glastobury that was Queen of the Stone age and Janelle Monae!
