...You mean the chap that put her on her 1st big stage at the BET awards? You mean the chap who he allowed open for him at the MSG, giving her yet another big audience to shine to? You mean the chap that is teaching her to play, improve and have advice on the leeching industry? Yeah, stay away from, you know, the envy of every entertainer of the last 20 years.

Lets take a look at that chaps track record with young talent and proteges. Name one he has truly helped develop and maintain a career. In that regard he is less successful than MANY people in the business today. He has proven he does not have a the "Midas touch". He knows what works for him, but when it comes to others...not so much. It will be 3 years later with a partially finished album, no distribution and no plan. She will be forgotten and he will have moved on. She seems to have the talent to deserve better than that.

She sings just fine you seem to bitch about this a lot but never give any examples. Even when someone like Janelle who is a great singer people still have to hate smh.

Oh dear...I see 2 or 3 have to come out and be negative towards her. Seriously, some people just can't stand seeing someone so talented and automatically get jealous. She is making music in it's purity and is not following this bubblegum, auto-tuning BS. I can't believe people can not like this artist, yet they quickly complain about the state of music today. She is a breath of fresh air.

She has a great talent for performing but that song posted does nothing.

Static simpleton bassline for ten minutes. It ain't Bootsy Collins by a long stretch.

And that's pretty much it. No syncopation or anything going on.

And then Janelle copies THAT boring old bassline after it's been playing for 5 minutes already for her improvised vocal melody LOL.

Like I said, I want to like her because she has flair and style, but musically that isn't anything special.

Maybe the clip wasn't the best example?

Am I missing something with the music in that clip??

Music, sweet music, I wish I could caress and...kiss, kiss...

ok, lets see this through,

Janelle, i saw for the first time yesterday, alarm bells, i have never seen someone like this before, last 30 yrs, my 40 yr life span, we are all right what we say, she needs guidence, Prince, if he can give her that, without all the personal belíefs, is one of many to help her...actually I have seen someone like that before...wink

If it were not for insanity, I would be sane.

Love her music, and the times I have seen her live have been some of the best gigs I have attended in years.

Looking forward to hearing new material from her.

Love her voice and her energy. She deserves all accolades.

Not everyone who happens to work with Prince is automatically in the protege' category either.

Oopsie! bad spelling, biggrin

Lets take a chill pill. (Yep, I'm old). I never said, nor did I imply that the girl is not talented. I just said that particular song was hackey. Those of us that have been around the musical block have heard it countless times. The orginal artical was pointing that out. That call and response? That was Cab Calloways shtick from the 1930's up until the Blues Brothers in the 80's. That bassline is Ska used by everyone from Fishbone to the Cherry Poppin Daddies, and I am talking 20 years ago. The entire vibe reminds me of Divinity Roxx.

Why are you talking about proteges?

Exactly. Janelle is not one of his proteges. It was Sean Combs who signed her. Sean was the one promoting her once she was signed. Prior to that she worked with Andre 3000/Outkast. She was a back up singer for Outkast, and wrote a few songs for the movie "Idlewild" that Andre and Outkast members were in. She just happens to be one of Prince's favorite artists among others, whose shows he's attended, just like Esperanza Spalding. Neither are Prince proteges.

Doesn't that mean she's just as doomed, if not more so?

I think she'll be fine. No one can predict if someone's life/career is doomed unless they have some special, unearthly powers. lol She is in control of her own creativity and career. It will all depend on how far she decides to take her career and how much creativity she puts into it to keep her fans interested, as any artist.
