I am so happy for her. She is, imho, the most talented breakthrough artist in the music scene today, and her The ArchAndroid is one of, if not, the best album of the decade so far. I have been wearing out that album 24/7 in the past few days.
Congrats to her.

A performance that Prince and James Brown would be proud of.

I never heard of her before last night, which I know is alittle strange for a Prince fan, but her Glastonbury performance blew me away, most exciting artist I have seen in yrs, if not decades... If it were not for insanity, I would be sane.

BRAVO performance! Glad that she is getting her justly-due international success and acclaim. But she has some more work to do here in the U.S. Happy about the success of The ArchAndroid and hopefully she can get her breakthrough here when the next album drops. Check me out and add me on:

Good for her | |

This is the first time I've ever heard her actually not sound totally offensive. I don't know if it's the nature of the song or she's actually improving. I hope that it's the latter.

If any of you have a second read this review, I cant believe journalists can write such nonsense and get away with it.
"Janelle Monae also works up a head of steam coming across like a minor heir to Prince or James Brown, and referencing Thirties stars such as Cab Calloway and Fred Astaire too. There's very little substance in her slick R&B, but undeniable style."
That is just a taster:
If it were not for insanity, I would be sane.

She wowed every single person in attendance? Yeah, I'm happy that she's getting attention, but only because I am sick and tired of those uninteresting radio pophiphop chart divas.
Otherwise, she's boring in my opinion and her voice better suited for Broadway or 'serious' music.

On a superficial level, she's hot.

Great! She definitely deserves it. I'm very happy for her. I used to live in Europe for several years and I've noticed that audiences there tend to appreciate and respect great artists such as P, MJ, Stevie, Miles, and Outkast (to name a few) a lot more than the ones here in the U.S. Hell, Jimi left this country as a relative unknown, went to the UK and just blew up like a time bomb, even had the Beatles and the Stones following him like he was some "messiah". At one point Eric Clapton and Pete Townsend actually considered throwing away their guitars figuring that Jimi had covered all basis. Then he comes back and finally blew up here with Monterrey. So, it comes as little surprise that Janelle is breaking big in the UK. Although, she's picked up a little in this country with her latest effort and a Grammy nod, it takes Americans a little longer to appreciate the talents of Janelle's caliber. I always tell people. You put this girl in front of large crowds and she'll be superstar! it's that simple... because she's just that damn talented!!

I haven't read the rest of the review, but from the quote there and watching the video, I agree about "very little substance". Ain't much to that song. It'd be damn boring without the theatrics and visual energy that she has!
I could listen to the JB's play for twice as long as that vid and it'd be hot, but there's no depth to that groove at all. No syncopation or anything. Bland as hell for me!
I want to like her though. I like where she's coming from. I just hope she hooks up with some better songwriters and producers that can get the best out of her unusual voice. Music, sweet music, I wish I could caress and...kiss, kiss...

Lol. This system of things....what are we gonna do...? Janelle Monae is a representation of what the future of music should be....i see in her what people saw in a young James or Michael. She channels such artists and makes them her own...just like the said artists did with their influences. My ONE concern is how and whether she can switch it up the next time round...and avoid getting stuck in a rut. Prince has been teaching her to play an instrument and giving advice, this should lead to greater things. I am glad Janelle is getting the recognition she deserves in Europe. I saw her in the U.S. a couple of weeks ago and she was wonderful. I would love to see her in a full length show with no other groups. Hopefully, I will get the chance in the future. I saw her over a year ago at a free performance (!) at the Memorial Union at the University of Wisconsin. It was a cold, drizzly night and the show was outdoors. But she blew everyone's socks off.
I (and the people I was with) felt like Alan Leeds said he felt the first time he saw Prince in New York - that we were watching someone who was going to be a big star.
Time will tell whether it happens, but she is a.ma.zing. We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

"There is an interesting vid on youtube of her covering Lets Go Crazy, BET awards with Prince in the audience, she has come on quite abit since that performance. I reckon after this weekend she is going to be absolutely massive, I just hope she keeps her head down and concentrates on real music and perfomance.
She is exactly what young people need to see and hear at the moment, given all the plastic music that has saturated the industry over the last few yrs or decade, and I include Coldplay in that bracket, a bunch of overrated session musicians."
I posted this earlier on another thread, but I agree, can she make it to the next level, she is 24, think about what P was doing at that age...just a thought If it were not for insanity, I would be sane.

This is it right there. You can believe there is talent there, and someone needs to bring it out. That bassline has been used so much it is in the public domain.

If she is serious about her career, she should stay as far away from Prince as possible.
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
Right. But i wouldn't expect Prince esq greatness from her, Prince is something else. Regardless of age, she doesn't have a time limit. She is working on her next album and she's very enthusiastic about it and, as said above, she is now playing instrumental parts on the new album. With this knowledge, i think she has a good chance of hitting that next level. Time will tell, of course. This Post is produced, arranged, composed and performed by WetDream

...You mean the chap that put her on her 1st big stage at the BET awards? You mean the chap who he allowed open for him at the MSG, giving her yet another big audience to shine to? You mean the chap that is teaching her to play, improve and have advice on the leeching industry? Yeah, stay away from, you know, the envy of every entertainer of the last 20 years. She needs someone to teach her how to sing on key; before anything else.
