That means even our people have forgotten what the fuck R&B really means. Probably forgot about all that time. "Let's include any one that has melisma and are 'powerful'." rolleyes Fuck outta here.

I can't even begin to comprehend what they used as criteria for the list.

lol@you pointing out janet being ahead of sam cooke when you also have rhianna, beyonce and others even higher on the list.i really need to know what the list means since they have one hit wonders like lauryn hill so high

This is true but you see it all over the place tho. Rihanna gets put in the R&B category at awards shows, radio station, etc. Black "alternative" acts like Santigold and The Noisettes have complained about being put in that R&B box. Frank Ocean has bitched about it too.

R&B just means black artist to a lot of people.

Even black people think it means that. rolleyes I'm sick of that. Like there's something wrong with being POP. Hell Patti LaBelle, I consider to be more POP than R&B anyways, but you see how they label her...

My guess is Essence is read by 16 year old girls who have never heard of people like Sam Cooke, Solomon Burke, Percy Sledge or any REAL R&B singers at all. Most of those names in the Top 20 are rappers and nu soul neer rap type singers. They are all pop crap

[Edited 6/26/11 3:41am]

Prince R&B? Nah.....maybe in For You and Prince, but definitely not after that. Beyonce number 6? Mary J. Blige number 3? No. This list sucks.

Essence is a women's magazine, and 8 of the Top 10 are women. falloff

And the what the fuck in New Edition doing on this list? Powerful? Oh yeah, this is a women's magazine. NE was influential, not powerful in any sense. Them dude's was still in the projects up to their fourth lp, weren't they?

I'm sick and tired of the Prince fans being sick and tired of the Prince fans that are sick and tired!

How did they decide the criteria for "powerful"? Especially when some of the artists listed are dead. Marvin Gaye and Sam Cooke won't be getting any commercial deals or movie roles or releasing new albums any time soon. On the other hand Beyonce, Alicia Keys and Rihanna are commercially speaking at the top of their game now, but it's too soon to tell if or when they'll be as infuential as Chaka or Aretha. And then there's Lauryn Hill, who put out one (studio) album which certainly raised the bar for performers, but hasn't had a proper followup since then. As far as producers go, I see they have Gamble & Huff, but what about Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis? Holland-Dozier-Holland? or Nile Rodgers & Bernard Edwards?

Janet at number 17? Save Aretha, she has more R&B #1s than any other female in history, and most of the people on that list, including MJ. She's just under James Brown and just over Marvin Gaye with the most amount of R&B #1s. This list is utter shite.

You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit who’s never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton

I guess someone is not a real singer unless they sell overpriced clothes and perfume.

I feel like the first half of the top ten, they were doing good. Aretha, Michael, Mary, Diana, (although I think the last two should be a switch-a-roo, Whitney...I can stomach that...but then it gets foggy. Like how is Maxwell more powerful in R&B than Sam Cooke & Marvin Gaye? Really? Same thing with Usher? Um...neutral And shit Stevie barely made it in here. LMAO

These lists are becoming more and more hilarious.

I don't believe in following numbers and hits. It has nothing to do with music. It's no different than McDonald's putting up a sign saying "Billions and billions sold". So what? It doesn't mean their food is superior, just that a lot of people bought it. Using that kind of criteria, then Vanilla Ice's debut album has sold more copies than any album by James Brown, Little Richard, Conway Twitty, B.B. King, Astrud Glberto, Bix Beiderbeke, etc. Does that mean Ice's music is any better or worse than anyone elses?

Numerous examples from the list, just naming one.

Yeah I agree. Songs such as Adore, Lady Cab Driver If I was Your Girlfriend, Black Sweat and etc. are definitely not r&b in any way shape or form.

booty! That's how I feel about this list. These lists are so full of shit. They lost me at #3. disbelief

Especially when they mention "of All Time" and then include a bunch of current popular artist who have no business anywhere near such list.

Regardless. Janet belongs at a higher level on that list than anybody's damn #17. At the end of the day, it's a shitty list anyway, so...
