Missy Elliott suffering from thyroid condition

Where has rap star Missy Elliott been for the past three years?

Mostly at home, quietly battling Graves' disease, she says in the new issue of People magazine (the story currently only appears in the magazine, not on the website).

An autoimmune disorder that affects the thyroid, the ailment was so debilitating that Elliott, 39, couldn't write or drive a car.

"I couldn't keep the brake down and almost crashed," she tells People, adding that she couldn't "even use a pen." Elliott revealed that she also suffered severe mood swings, dizzy spells, lumps in her throat, bulging eyes and hair loss.

Radiation treatments have helped her cope with the symptoms (Graves' is incurable), and so has exercise, which led her to shed 30 pounds. "My thyroid is functioning, so I haven't had to take medication in about nine months. [But] you live with it for the rest of your life."

The singer is also slated to be the subject of the June 29 season premiere of VH1's Behind the Music, in which she'll open up about being molested as a child. "I remember it like it was yesterday," she tells People.

Explains the absence at least. Wishing her well.

Yannowhat?

I'm definitely watching her BTM episode! She's suffered a lot. She got raped at eight by a cousin and her father was an abusive asshole who once forced her and her mother outside in the cold without clothes. disbelief sad Not to add all the madness she suffered while trying to make Sista (and the Swing Mob) work prior to her superstardom. Miss E is definitely a BTM story!

I was remembering her for the past few days and to now read this sad I will definitely watch the show and buy the book if she writes one. You know, one time she wrote in a magazine she used to write letters to mj and janet to help her out of her situation and sad things like that, and I have an article from an old magazine too about how she and her mom fled and then when they settled in elsewhere, that's where she met timbaland and they would make music for fun and the rest is history.

I absolutely love Missy. She is so multi-talented & underated. She is like this millenniums Teena Marie(R.I.P) I chatted with her on twitter a few months ago & told her that...There is no other women, that is right now doing it like she did. Produce, write,sing,rap..etc..

I'm not afraid to admit that I didn't get it (her) right away. I think it was only after I saw her first video that I immediately understood where she was coming from. She really brought something new to the hip hop table. I loved her every since. I wish her well! I hope "Block Party" is a big success. Music needs her.

Was wondering why she seemed to have disappeared, particularly when it seemed she was in such high demand. I wish her well, she was rather innovative and I would love to see her make a come-back.

A few leaked songs are floating around, which means she's been recording during that time.

Graves' disease. Definitely no laughing matter at all. It can become so serious enough, that Olympic sprinter/hurdler Gail Devers almost lost both of her feet from it.

Damn... high blood pressure, thyroid condition... stay living healthy Missy!!!

I had no idea she was considered "inactive" considering her production for Monica and Jazmine Sullivan.

I've been waiting since 2007 for Block Party though sad

Well technically she always was producing. Issues kept her from doing it herself so she stuck to behind the scenes work. Guess we'll get word on the new album soon.
