Maybe Prince is too quirky for some of them, but I went through something like this with Prince too recently.

I'm 23 and I realized at 16 that my taste in music was different from most of my friends, so I don't even try. While my friends are excited about Nicki Minaj, Lil Wayne, Rihanna, and and the flavor of the month acts, I don't see the big deal and goes on listening to Michael Jackson, Prince, Boom Clap Bachelors, Kate Bush, Chuckii Booker, Duran Duran, Craig David, George Michael, Go West, Isleys, J*Davey, Jesse Johnson, Mayer Hawthorne, and other people.
I've been in moments where I discover an artist but when I tell them, it's "Ahh, it's okay"....then that act becomes popular and they can't get enough of their songs It happened with The Weeknd and Frank Ocean "We may deify or demonize them but not ignore them. And we call them genius, because they are the people who change the world."

Shit I knew at TEN my musical tastes were different from everyone else. Hell I remember back in sixth grade, I played a Stevie Wonder tape and got strange looks. I mean I was into hip-hop of that time too but I was already an old school addict by then.

My taste in music was always different from everyone else that I was close to. At one point I was the only one in my house listening to rap music. Then I was the only one in my family listening to rock. No I'm the only one who really listens to techno and edm. I have found a few people who share my taste, but, generally, people are always commenting about how eclectic my taste in music is. It's probably due to the fact that I never, really had a favorite artist. Some pieces of work would stand out, but there were few artists that I could, honestly, say that I'm an actual fan of. I only have two favorite artists currently.
My roommate does hate almost all of my music though. They'll listen to it, but they hate it. I tell them that I can't comprehend only having like 2 songs to listen to in my entire playlist. There's just so much music out there, how can you limit yourself to only a handful of songs? Then again, it's like when I go to work and there's all this great food around and yet there are like 50+ people on a line for Subway. That's just crazy. Why not just be adventuorous and try something new?
Or what if you are not in the mood to hear what you have? In my playlist, if I want to hear upbeat crazy fast happy hardcore, I put it on. If I want something more tranquil I put on classical. If I want something groovy I put on funk and so on.
I don't blame them. Some of those acts I don't listen to either and I hope I never run into anyone trying to get me into most of them. Though, at least I have tried. I just can't get into some of those vocals.
I'm not really into him either, but that's the one place where most of everyone I met agrees with me at. I was playing Do Me Baby for my mom and she told me "Who the hell is this?!" I told her it was Prince and she told me to turn it off since it was too embarrassing to listen to him sing so bad. I have another friend who really hates Prince. Everytime I ask him why he doesn't want to even tell me as you can see the sheer look of disgust in his face. I do know that it's his 'singing' that really turns him off though.
As for why people, generally, have an issue with Prince's music is because it's not really as accessible I think. Also, I think it's also when he sings. A lot of his music is an acquired taste I think. This is not a good or bad thing.

I like my friends the way they are. That's why they're my friends.
