Maxwell got into the groove when he taped VH1 Storytellers before an intimate 150-member audience at Metropolis Studios in New York City earlier this month. The R&B crooner and his 10-piece, all-star band delivered a soulful set, bringing fans onstage at one point for an impromptu dance party.

“‘Storytellers’ has been around for 15 years, and it’s been 15 years since I put out my first album Maxwell’s Urban Hang Suite,” the humble star told the crowd. “You have this dream as a kid, and the next thing you know you’re at ‘VH1 Storytellers’ and the crowd is singing along to your songs. It’s a blessing.”

During the 12-song set, Maxwell performed hits spanning his catalogue, including “Pretty Wings” and the war-inspired “Fistful of Tears” from his 2009 Grammy-winning album BLACKsummers’night.

As he prepares for the sequel’s arrival later this year, he took fans back in time to play past favorites and celebrate his storied career.

VH1 Storytellers: Maxwell will premiere on June 17 at 11 p.m. EST/PST.

They have been saying this 4 quite a while......and it's still NOT out.

He was so good when I saw him last year I will be checking this out.

I think the album is coming out later this year. Earlier this year, he confirmed it with no actual date as well as the "speculated" album cover.

Go complain in a D'Angelo or Lauryn Hill thread. They haven't released anything in over 11 years!

Over the years I'd have agreed with you, but I'm starting to think that if he's completed his trio of albums he's going to drop the album on time, a la New Amerykah. If part 1 dropped in 2009 I'd take the (moderately heavy) odds he drops part 2 in 2011.

I read from someone who says they attended the taping that it was a blast, but that he was down on Embrya. Thats too bad, because I still think that is his best record.

With respect to Maxwell records, I will believe one exists when it is on the store shelf.

Are you talking about this new taping of VH1 Storytellers? If so, I wouldn't be surprised because Maxwell did look at Embrya as his thing. I think he got tired of that whole Urban Hang Suite vibe and I got kind've burned out by it too by 1998-99, even though it is a modern classic. I still view Embrya as his apex record and I'm disappointed that it didn't get the push it deserved, and still deserves today.

Did he speak negatively or in support of the album?
