Gloria Estefan ~ Wepa **New song**

You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit who’s never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton

Gloria Estefan

Gloria Estefan

Billions have heard her unmistakable voice, millions have flocked to her electrifying performances, and an astonishing 90 million of her albums have sold worldwide. Though GLORIA ESTEFAN exploded onto the pop scene in 1985 as the dynamic front woman of the groundbreaking Miami Sound Machine, it was the seven time Grammy winner’s soar to solo-act superstardom, which clearly earned her title, the “Queen of Latin Pop.”

Born Gloria Maria Fajardo in Havana, Cuba, to Jose Manuel Fajardo, a Cuban Security soldier and school teacher Gloria Garcia Perez de Fajardo, they fled Cuba in 1959, when Fidel Castro seized power of the country and settled in a neighborhood behind Miami’s Orange Bowl Stadium.

In 1975 she met Emilio Estefan, Jr., who invited her to join his band The Miami Latin Boys. It was a matter of time before Gloria and Emilio fell in love and married in 1978. With a name change to the Miami Sound Machine the band was about to make musical history. By 1983, under the leadership of Emilio Estefan, Jr., the group was well known throughout Central America and South America. In 1984, Eyes of Innocence the band’s first English album stunned the music world especially once their song Conga become a major hit, appearing on Billboard’s Pop, Latin, Soul and Dance charts simultaneously.

Through the years, Gloria has remained true to all facets of her bi-cultural heritage. Focused and committed, she survived an accident that nearly brought her life to an end when her tour bus collided with a semi-trailer in 1990. Estefan marked her return one- year later with the release of the multi-platinum album Into the Light backed by a 29-country world tour. In recent years, Gloria was invited to perform at the closing ceremony of the XIX Winter Olympic Games.

As one of the most revered Hispanic female role models, Gloria has received numerous recognitions and honors. In 1992 she was invited by President George Bush to serve as a public member of the United States Delegation to the 47th General Assembly to the United Nations. In addition, she was the first-ever Latin female to receive the BMI “Songwriter of the Year” award. She has composed 15 of her own Top 10 Hits and has written worldwide hits recorded by renowned artists such as Shakira and Jennifer Lopez.

A gifted artist of international acclaim, she has extended herself through humanitarian efforts. In 2009, she was presented with the Ellis Island Family Heritage Award and the “American Spirit Award” given by the Pepperdine University Hispanic Council in 2005. Additionally, she was presented with an award, next to her husband, Emilio named the “National Artistic Achievement Award” presented by the U.S Congress on July 4 of 2005, commemorating Capitol’s Fourth 25th anniversary. Also, she was presented with the International Women’s Forum “Hall of Fame” award and The Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute chose her to be the recipient of their 2001 Medallion of Excellence for Community Service.

In 1997, she founded the Gloria Estefan Foundation, aimed to reach those who struggle outside the safeguards of society by promoting good health, education and cultural development. Following her own brush with paralysis, in March of 1994, Gloria teamed up with the Miami Project to Cure Paralysis, the world’s largest and most comprehensive spinal cord injury research center to serve as the Capital Campaign Director for the Miami Project’s new building campaign that raised over $40 million dollars. Today the Miami Project’s new home, the Lois Pope LIFE Center, is a state-of-the-art facility that has brought together some of the most prominent neuroscience researchers in the world.

Estefan is celebrated as a Best-selling author after the release of her second children’s book, Noelle’s Treasure Tale: A New Magically Mysterious Adventure (in Spanish: El Tesoro de Noelle, Harper Collins, illustrated by Michael Garland). Her smash literary debut, Mysterious Adventures of Noelle the Bulldog (in Spanish: Las mágicas y misteriosas aventuras de una bulldog llamada Noelle) made it to the New York Times best-seller list for Children’s Books. Both volumes include Gloria’s recordings of her children’s songs, the latest featuring the poignant “See With Your Heart.”

The books center on the life and adventures of Noelle, an intrepid bulldog inspired by and named after Gloria’s real-life beloved English bulldog. A celebrity in her own right, Noelle has appeared with Gloria on Oprah and has been featured in People Magazine.

In the fall of 2007, Gloria released “90 Millas”, a collection of newly recorded original Spanish language songs celebrating Cuban music and culture. The album also pays homage to the most influential and universally respected Latin musicians of the past fifty years. Some of the artists joining Estefan on this album include Grammy award winning artist CARLOS SANTANA, JOHNNY PACHECO (whom many refer to as the ‘godfather of salsa’), trumpet virtuoso ALFREDO ‘CHOCOLATE’ ARMENTEROS, conga drum diva SHEILA E., actor and musician ANDY GARCIA, and CACHAO who is credited as the creator of mambo. This album brought her the #1 single “No Llores” and two Latin Grammy awards.

In 2008, Gloria embarked on a European tour performing to sold out crowds in 11 different cities over two months. Tour stops included Istanbul, London, Madrid, Barcelona Tenerife, Rotterdam and finally ending in Aruba. This marked the first time in twelve years that Estefan toured Europe. Later that year Gloria was named the Latin Recording Academy’s “Person of the Year”, she is the first women to receive this recognition.

In 2009, Gloria became the first Cuban-American to become a minority share-holder in an NFL franchise, by purchasing a stake in the Miami Dolphins.

Gloria’s greatest pride is her family, Nayib (31) and Emily Marie (16) and her marriage of 33 years with her husband Emilio Estefan. Dynamic and transcendent as musician, artist and woman, Gloria remains a beacon of inspiration to her legion of fans worldwide.

Music review: Opening night at the Hollywood Bowl

Gloria Estefan, the queen of Latin pop, and jazz singer and pianist Harry Connick Jr. brought salsa and boogie woogie into the swanky, schmaltzy festivities honoring the opening night of the summer season.

The Hollywood Bowl Orchestra, conducted by Thomas Wilkins, kicked off the concert with the Overture for “Colas Breugnon,” by Russian composer Dmitry Kabalevsky. It was a kinetic performance that would soon be eclipsed by circus acrobatics, fancy two-stepping and clave workouts.

Celebrators with picnic baskets filled the bowl from the box seats to the back lawn. In her opening remarks, Dame Helen Mirren set a tone of erudition and wonder as she praised this “iconic symbol of culture” with “18,000 people focused together on beauty and harmony.” What critic dare argue with the queen?

Irisbowl A team of acrobats from Cirque du Soleil provided the first public peek at "Iris," the tribute to cinema that begins previews at the Kodak Theatre on July 21. The Crayola-colored gremlins tumbled and twirled and leapt -- sometimes using each other’s feet as launching pads, as if they were made out of springs. The orchestra played the bejesus out of Danny Elfman’s original score, which sounds likely to be a great asset. Wilkins saluted the "Simpsons’" songwriter, who was present, as “one of the great American composers.”

Perhaps in comparison to the tumblers’ agility, Hilary Swank seemed stiff and formal as she stumbled over her introduction of Connick. The singer was likewise awkward as he sang the jazz standard “The Way You Look Tonight.” He admitted cracking a few notes, then said he was glad he was not a Cirque acrobat: “The equivalent of cracking a note for them and you die.” That moment of banter in a largely scripted evening broke the ice. Connick crooned the Beatles’ “And I Love Her” (an appropriate song for the venue), his Sinatra tones, which are waxing deeper and richer with age, caressing the notes.

It wasn’t until he reached back to his Louisiana heritage that Connick truly broke loose. Joined by Crescent City brass players Lucien Barbarin and Mark Braud, he “showed the audience how we dance in New Orleans,” then shook his tail feather around the stage. With his marquee looks, Connick has become a movie star. But in a fierce piano solo in which he completely left the meter in the able hands of the orchestra and pursued his own Monkish muse, he showed that he has not lost his roots in America’s deepest musical tradition -- that at heart, he’s a jazz man. In a night in which every person who walked onstage was verbally defined by what awards they had won, I believed Connick when he said, “I don’t base my art on success.”

Gloriaandy Estefan likewise mines a deep cultural vein -- what regions have given the world more great music than Louisiana and Cuba? Even her disco and pop hits get their beat from the clave rhythm -- that’s why they call the song “Conga.” Estefan wryly acknowledged that she would be playing that classic until she died. She performed with her longtime collaborators the Miami Sound Machine, with the orchestra providing a largely drowned-out backing, and with a wisecracking, self-consciously hirsute Andy Garcia on percussion. (He’s playing a homeless person in a film, he explained as he introduced his sister Miamian.)

Estefan’s voice also has grown affectingly husky. It shone when she sang in Spanish, less so on the overbearing Olympics song “Reach.” Estefan came off as droll and practical, Connick as quirky and intense. They came together beautifully on a duet of “Come Rain or Come Shine.”

The night was dedicated to raising funds for musical education. Between the star presentations, an orchestra made up of students from West Adams Preparatory High School and the James A. Foshay Learning Center ably performed James L. Hosay’s “Heaven’s Valley.”

The Return Of Gloria Estefan

Pharrell Williams and Gloria EstefanThe Queen of Latin Pop, Gloria Estefan releases her new Summer Smash single Wepa (on Crescent Moon Records) – available on Itunes.com/Wepa now and produced by Pharrell Williams. The single is the first to be taken from her uplifting new album Miss Little Havana her first English-language album since 2004’s Unwrapped.

Neptunes mega-producer Pharrell Williams has worked with everyone from Madonna to Jay-Z, Justin Timberlake and Gwen Stefani. He has produced and is co-writer of Gloria’s new album Miss Little Havana – due later this year. The album is a high energy and dance orientated masterpiece akin to the sound of her early sound of Miami Sound Machine.

“I think we’ve got no sex, but a new baby between Pharrell and I”, joked Estefan. “And I am really excited for it to come out! It's truly been a magical experience and a wonderfully natural process."

Exclusive: Gloria Estefan: 'It was easy making another dance record'

Tuesday, August 2 2011, 11:47am EDT
By Lewis Corner, Music Reporter

© PA Images / Jeff Daly

Gloria Estefan has admitted that she found it easy returning to her dance roots.

The singer has worked with Pharrell Williams on her new single 'Wepa', which is out now, and has said that her return to a heavier dance-oriented sound felt very natural.

Speaking to Digital Spy about how she found working on new upbeat material, Estefan explained: "It felt great. I love dance. It's been the core of my career if you go back to 'Conga' and 'Dr Beat' - there has always been some dance elements in my music.

"It feels very natural to me and it's definitely a part of my sound. And it's fun! Especially with Pharrell because it gives it a different take. It's like Latin meets dance through his mind! It was very easy and we just clicked."

When asked what influenced her new single, the 53-year-old responded: "It's inspired by a merengue beat mixed with Pharrell's urban sensibilities.

"The idea is that it's an anthem for everyone, because dancing is something that everyone can participate in - whether you have a dollar or a million, it makes no difference when you're out there sweating and being primal."

Explaining what the meaning behind the single title is, Estefan said: "Wepa doesn't really mean anything. It's kind of an expression like 'woo' or 'hey' - it's a celebratory expression. It's used a lot by Colombians and Puerto Ricans."

Gloria Estefan's 11th studio album Miss Little Havana will be released later this year.
