What song you think defines an artist? Yay for my first discussion topic!
What song(s) you think defines an artist?
Like for example, with MJ some might pick Billie Jean or some might pick Thriller or both!
But what about other artist like Prince, Whitney, Mariah, Beyonce, Rihanna, etc.... #MichaelJackson #JanetJackson #Prince

You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit who’s never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton

Whitney and Prince's signature songs are definitely "I Will Always Love You" and "Purple Rain".
-What you said about MJ is right. In my eyes, "Billie Jean" is his signature song, but others would probably pick "Thriller". Especially younger people. Either one. Same with say Marvin Gaye. Some would say "Lets Get It On" is his signature, but many others would say "Sexual Healing" or maybe even "What's Going On". "And When The Groove Is Dead And Gone, You Know That Love Survives, So We Can Rock Forever" RIP MJ
"Baby, that was much too fast"...Goodnight dear sweet Prince. I'll love you always

For Madonna, I think it's Like a Virgin. LOLS! When you think of Madonna, I'm pretty sure most people think of this song.
For Mike, definitely Billie Jean. The song Thriller (while fun) is not even that worthy to be called Mike's signature song.
Prince = Purple Rain.
Mariah is a hard one. I think Hero is probably her signature song.
Beyonce is Crazy in Love or maybe Single Ladies.
Rihanna is Umbrella. ~Time Spent Learning is a Time Never Wasted~

These are two artists who would be hard to define by one song.

Very true!, but believe it or not a lot of people will know them only for those songs...
Which is shocking cause Elton has over 50 top 40 hits & Stevie like 33 top 10 hits. Pistols sounded like "Fuck off," wheras The Clash sounded like "Fuck Off, but here's why.."- Thedigitialgardener

But the others i agree with 100 percent Pistols sounded like "Fuck off," wheras The Clash sounded like "Fuck Off, but here's why.."- Thedigitialgardener

The obvious stuff that they have to play in concert or people complain.
Prince - "Purple Rain"
Mariah - "Hero"? I'm guessing.
Beyonce - "Independent Women" or "Irreplaceable"
Rihanna - "Only Girl in the World"
Whitney - "Greatest Love of All"...I think that's the title? lol "I don't think you'd do well in captivity." - random person's comment to me the other day

I think Stevie would be "Superstitious" - that's the song by him I always, always see people mention. "I don't think you'd do well in captivity." - random person's comment to me the other day

For me, Elton's song would be "Bennie & The Jets", or "Crocodile Rock".

For me, I'll always identify Rod Stewart with "Maggie May".

or Your Song. I guess that means he doesn't really have one.
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
My song for the Beatles will always be "Hard Days Night".
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
...or "Daniel", lol. Which is why I mentioned earlier in this thread, it would be hard to associate Elton John or Stevie Wonder with ONE song.

They're another one. It could be I Want to Hold Your Hand, She Loves You, Can't Buy Me Love, Help, Hey Jude, A Day In The Life etc

As an artist, I think it would be an honor to elude being identified by one song. From what I personally know of Prince, I would say he's another. Except I concede that most of the world probably knows him best by "Purple Rain" only (...although I can come up with about a dozen songs that could be his defining song - IMO).

Isaac Hayes -- Shaft Miles Davis -- All Blues John Coltrane -- Part I/Acknowledgement Thelonious Monk -- 'Round Midnight Public Enemy -- Fight The Power The Police -- Every Step You Take Joan Jett -- I Love Rock N' Roll Erykah Badu -- On and On Maxwell -- Ascension (Don't Ever Wonder) Al Green -- Love & Happiness Earth, Wind & Fire -- Shining Star
Many of these artists defy definition by just one song. Some of the above and many more are defined better by albums than songs. [Edited 8/3/11 12:07pm] Good night, sweet Prince | 7 June 1958 - 21 April 2016
