They should do an Unsung on the Fifth Dimension a black group in the 60's who were doing hippy songs like Aquaris and Go Where You Wanna Go.
LaMonte McLemore from that group was the Jet magazine photographer for their swimsuit models for years. Didn't Florence LaRue and Marilyn McCoo get in the group due to their JET Beauty of the Week connections? |

Isn't Johnny Mathis gay?
Of course. They just have a deep friendship. |

Her kids. I was wondering why the quick divorce. I think she married the idiot because he was Christian. She definitely blamed that on herself. Marrying someone because of status (he was a minister). |

I enjoyed this episode. Nice to know Deniece has a great sense of humor. But I wish TV-One would do episode on artists who are truly unsung, at the top of my list: Frankie Beverly. You want to talk about being unsung & overlooked by the music press and awards organizations. I was pleasantly surprised to see an old clip of him on American Bandstand in the late 70s. Hey... |

Honestly this is what I thought unsung was all about. During the opening credits that is what the commentator hints at... that this person is being spotlighted because they somehow missed the marked.
To me, Deniece Williams did not miss the mark and neither did last years subject, The Ojays. What standards are they going by when they decided this person(s) was "unsung" "Remember, one man's filler is another man's killer" -- Haystack |

Since they are clearly going in a different direction than they orginally intended, they should consider changing the name of the show. Any suggestions out there??? "It's not nice to fuck with K.B.! All you haters will see!" - Kitbradley

I agree with you both, but I have a feeling that a lot of times it's the artist that prefers to go "unsung."
I used to ask a radio friend of mine that was really close to Johnnie Taylor why Johnnie was never recognized in the mainstream. A lot of Johnnie's music and styling can be heard throuhout a lot of singers (especially modern day blues singers). His response to me was that Johnnie was an "ignant mother fucker." He then went on to explain how Johnnie was so strung out on drugs and loved too many women and just never changed his ways later in life.
I said all of that to say that I think Frankie and Maze may suffer fromt he same "ignant mother fucker" syndrome. The ony awards that I know that Frankie has received is a Trumpet award. I never have understood why they have not been recognized on the Soul Train Awards or even BET. Maybe Cathy Hughes will do it (if Frankie will allow it). |

I don't know. I know little about the group's origins. I read once that some of the members of the 5th Dimension and Friends Of Distinction were part of another group, but split into separate acts. My mom told me she used to go to Johnnie's concerts in the 1970's, and that he was sometimes drunk onstage. I met him and he was drunk and high. That was one of the reasons he died. He got too high on coke and had a heart attack at his girfriend's house. The press release says he died at Charleton Methodist Center in Dallas, but that's not really true. He was pronounced dead there. |
