20th Anniversary Of Marvin Gaye's Unorthodox Performance Of Star Spangled Banner At NBA All Star Game

Well with all of the parties, events {and yes traffic} that happened here in Atlanta this weekend for the NBA All Star Game. Just thought we could reflect back to Marvin's soulful rendition of The Star Spangled Banner at the 1983 all star game. This was surely one of many great highlights in the career Of Gaye.

I still remember it like it was yesterday. Marvin decked out in that suit with the sunglasses on delivering an intense soulful reading of the national anthem. By the time Marvin reached the end of the anthem, he had everybody clapping in sync with the beat of the music. Classic moment!!! Marvin broke it on down with class and sophistication. Only a genius such as he could have pulled something like this off.

R.I.P. Brother Marvin

I remember watching the All-Star game that day, & I remember 1st hearing the accompanying "music", which was basically a drum machine & an organ (?)..

After the 1st couple of lines, the cameras panned around some of the players, several of whom seemed either really surprised or embarassed..

I thought to myself
"DAMN! WHAT THE HELL is he doing???"
in singing the National Anthem this way..
I called it the "sexual anthem" then,
but

now when I look back on his version,
I appreciate it..
were it not for the "Sexual Healing" music in the background Marvin's version probably would have come off as more "passionate" than "sexual"..

in any event, it was well done
&
ONLY Marvin could have pulled it off like this.
I'll see you tonight..
in ALL MY DREAMS..

I hear ya, Brother915. Marvin rocked it like no other can that day! What a statement. The Star Spangled Banner through brown eyes.
Yes, R.I.P. Brother Marvin.

I could pretty much take it or leave it. It didn't move me, and it didn't annoy me. shrug
This post not for the wimp contingent. All whiny wusses avert your eyes.

No you are not. There was a lot of backlash from "patriotic" americans who felt Marvin had disgraced his country.

Marvin is in my CD player now... "Here My Dear". To be honest, a day doesn't pass when I don't listen to something by Marvin.

However I've never seen the performance you guys are talking about...

Marvin Sang/Song the Heart out of that Song.He Put so Much Soul to it DAMN!!! Marvin is one of My All-Time Favorite Artists Ever&between reading His Books&Listening to His Movies The Cat stays on Music Players. He turned the Anthem Out Period.nobody can touch His Version IMHO.only Jimi Hendrix&&Whitney Houston come in the distant 2nd&3rd for me.but Marvin was So SoulFul He made the Game truly have a Added Impact.I was listening to "vulnerable" this Weekend.Toast&Props to Brother915 for Bringing this UP!!also cool to go back in time when the All_Star Game meant something&wasn't so Damn Fixed as Yesterdays was.I'm so Glad the West Won thank goodness for that at least.tired of that Jordan Lovefeast YIKES!!!

I just heard it for the first time at this website. http://www.npr.org/displa...85241.html

It's not bad, but I'm not impressed either.
