I think Rihanna has painted herself into a box in the process of her becoming a popular artist. With her first cd, the reggae influenced the pop enough that she could do fast and slow tracks that were well-done. Her second CD delved a lot less into the reggae side of things, and if not pop, there was a distinct R&B influence on the ballads. With her 3rd and 4th CDs she became known for the more upbeat tracks that the public as a whole latched on to. Now with this CD, where almost all of the hits are fast-paced, she can't do a sentimental ballad well anymore because people have lost interest. In the long run, an artist that can't do fast songs, slow songs, and songs in between will not have a long-lasting career. But in the short-term, she can make her money, and maybe churn out a few more CDs before she fades.
