Lady Gaga--First album review is brutal

"Lady Gaga tries to make herself the queen of gay rights, but comes across as someone who is exploiting gays rather than helping them."
This always has been a problem for me with artists like Gaga, Kylie etc. I always ask myself the question, why are they concerned about gayrights, if they are not gay themselve?
I really want to believe they are sincere about their message, but what the reviewer is saying goes through my mind frequently.

I never cared what critics said...it's just one person's opinion. their opinions are not more plausible than anyone else's.

This isn't a real review. The Examiner is a joke. Anyone can write for it. It's not done by real journalists. I wonder if this person even heard the record since they don't describe the unreleased songs in much detail. It sounds like it is written by a Madonna fan who is threatened by Gaga's success. I'm a Madonna fan myself but I've never understood Madonna fans who attack Gaga relentlessly. It's childish. There's room for both in the music world. I've never understood the argument that if you're not gay yourself, that you can't speak out in favor of equal rights for gay people. Maybe because they have friends and or family that are gay and they don't like to seem them discriminated against. Do you really think people are so selfish that they can only care about something that directly affects them? I don't hear African Americans complaining when white people support their causes or women complaining when men support their equal rights. But for some reason in the gay community, they don't want straight allies or think if straight people support them, they are insincere, I don't get it. Gay people are a relatively small minority. If they are going to get full rights, they need as many people on their side as possible. What would you prefer that these singers sing homophobic lyrics? It's crazy. Why can't you accept their support without attacking them? For every gay dollar a singer gets by supporting gay issues, they lose just as much if not more from homophobes. So to say supporting gay issues is a marketing thing is crazy. Be glad people are on your side and in your corner and accept their support graciously. Plus, Gaga is part of the GLBT community because she defines herself as bisexual.
Having said that, what I've heard so far from BTW doesn't impress me. So I think the real reviews may be negative.

I see it the same way.
You're so glam, every time I see you I wanna slam!

You could be right, you could be wrong. When i see people like Kylie and Gaga peform, i usually see a bunch of good looking, half naked guys as back up dancers. Of course we like that. But are they there because of gay rights or because the performers know we like that and we will buy their music? Do you really think that people will get less homophopic because they see Gaga perform?
Madonna once had a "relationship" with a woman, but i never saw her getting married to one. Bowie used this bisexual thing too, but it didn't mean a thing. So Gaga being bisexual....mmhhh..
Not attacking Gaga, i think she is great, i just think the reviewer has a point.

I don't think that Kylie and Gaga have ever said that using naked male dancers is supporting gay rights. It's entertainment for their female fans as well. I thought we were talking about them speaking out in favor of gay issues in their interviews and lyrics. Maybe what Gaga is doing isn't a big deal to you as an older person, but what she is doing is important to younger gay people and teenagers who are still struggling with their sexuality. Every person speaking out helps a little bit. Gay people have more rights today and homophobia is less because people have spoken out . Suppose no one ever spoke out because they were afraid someone would question their motives. I'm not saying homophobes will magically change their mind when they hear a Gaga song, but every person speaking out helps to change the climate and should be celebrated not attacked.
Madonna never said she was bisexual. But even saying you are bisexual makes it okay and more accepted to having same sex relationships.I'm bisexual and I'm tired of being put down by the official gay community and being questioned by people who say bisexuality doesn't exist and I'm lying. Why am I considered second class in the GLBT community instead of an equal.
I just find there's a fundamental cyncisim and mean spiritedness in the gay male community that doesn't help our cause. The attitude toward Gaga is more of the same. There are many things to criticize about Gaga but her support of equal rights isn't one of them.

It might have been better had the reviewer let us know his opinion of Lady Gaga's previous album. The way the review was written it's impossible to know if the writer knows anything about music other than the fact that he likes Madonna. I don't think that he did a very good job of letting us know why he didn't like the album and no matter how bad it may be I find it impossible to believe that it is the worst album released by a major artist since Madonna's American Life.

I'd love to shake this guys hand for that review.

Me too | |

Oh please, you really think Kylie has all these naked guys to appeal to female fans? Ever been to a Kylie concert? LOL!
I'm not putting down bisexuality at all. You didn't get what i was saying. Madonna said she was in a relation with a woman (Sandra?), so she was giving the impression she was bisexual, but she is totally straight. I just don't like people to give the impression they are bisexual, when they are not.
It's not that simple....they send a message that they are bisexual, but you know what? They end up having kids with their husband and have a happy family life.
Once again, i'm not critizing Gaga, i'm just not sure what her motives are....lest see in 10 years when she's happily married with two kids....which i won't have in my life

Lady Gaga came out as bisexual in the media during the promo for "Poker Face". so.....

Pathetic review anyway
this is not a review, this is just vitriol. This imbecile is just sayin' that GaGa has written 17 ripoffs, and that's bullshit. If GaGa uses a sax, she's ripping the E Street off; if she does an upbeat rock number, she's just ripping Cher off; if she writes about AIDS, she's just ripping "In This Life" off... OH, C'MON SHUT YOUR FILTHY MOUTH ALREADY, SIR
I truly want this album to CONQUER the world, even if it's only average", just to make this "critics" suffer. And, the way I see it, this album is still BETTER than any other mainstream pop album released during 2010 and 2011 (so far)...
suddenly, I support GaGa 100%, the lady doesn't deserve this vitriol... I'M GONNA BUY THE ALBUM

This is why I think this review is bullshit. It doesn't describe any song that isn't already released or that has been performed on the tour already.

So? Did you here about her girlfriends than? Is she living with a woman now?
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
What, she's not gay enough for you? LOL. Her love life isn't anyone's business, but the fact we know she identifies as bisexual is reason enough.
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
LOL! She's not gay to me at all.
When somebody is bisexual, all of a sudden her love life isn't anyone's business.
It's exactley my point, she identifies herself as bisexual, but does she show it? Did she have realatonships with women?

I don't know - I truly don't care to know or seek the knowledge. I'm not interested on that level. She has expressed on many occasions she identifies under the LGBT spectrum and I'm not in the business of divisiveness.
Guess what? If someone wants to pimp out my ideals and put them on the front of the television and newspaper, if the message of unity and equality is sung about in #1 songs, and if someone has the balls to go out there and continue to be shit talked and still defend herself and the community she has tons of friends and fans within, then I think there's a burden of proof there I can't ignore.
Furthermore, I will take a pandering, cheesy, 80s-sounding, Cher-ripping-off, Madonna-swagger-jacking tune that says it's okay to be gay at the #1 spot any day over songs about sucking on someone's dick or songs that call someone nigger or faggot or any other hateful message.
And that's the t on that.

album leaked. pretty good so far. not earth shattering tho.

You're totally right, although i like to hear that song "about sucking on someone's dick".
People were interested when George Michael came out and i'm sure you read the storys too. I just want it for the right reasons, that's all. I'll just wait for the day Gaga falls in love with a woman and goes public with it. Till that time, she's not bisexual to me.
It's all about love and the right reasons. Not dollars.

Makes you think....why did white people march in the civil rights rallies? Record sales?
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
Yawn, that 'review' was just a compilation of all the lazy criticisms levelled at Gaga. Not entirely unsurprising, there was always going to be a backlash when it's been so hyped, this guy just wanted to get in first.
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
The reviewer seems a bit biased to be honest. I don't think Ga ga is trying to imitate Madonna to the extent the writer says - she has other inspirations from other artists too.
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
More bullshit from a Madonna uber-fan, who's probably not even an actual music critic. Gaga is ruling these other bitches and so many people hate that fact that it just makes you LOL!

leaving that BS of "best album of the decade" aside, it's a decent pop album, IMO. [Edited 5/17/11 19:45pm]

It's just 'in style' now to trash Gaga for whatever reason. *eyeroll*
Funny thing is, a lot of the people that are shititng on her now were probably all over her a year ago.
People love to put others on pedestals and then knock them off, and groupthink is a bitch. "I don't think you'd do well in captivity." - random person's comment to me the other day

The album review was kinda trashy in the same way it described the album.ARE THE SONGS ON THE ALBUM THAT NOTICABLE to be compared to other artists and their songs?wow. I STAN and SLAY for Prince LOL.

Not gonna even touch on the Gaga album cause the lady bores me but I was reading something about how their were alterior motives for some of the whites who championed civil rights. Can't remember what it was but---anyone else know what I am thinking of? Space for sale...
