What The Critics Are Saying June 22, 2011
It’s been nearly four years since R&B singer Jill Scott graced us with a new album. Her fourth studio venture is finally here, and is garnering generally positive feedback from critics.
“The Light of the Sun” was released on Tuesday (June 21), rolling off the momentum of her noteworthy lead single featuring Anthony Hamilton, “So In Love.” The 15-track album also includes collaborations with Doug E. Fresh, Eve and Paul Wall, as well as that signature spoken-word we come to expect from Ms. Scott.
Jon Pareles of the New York Times observes that many of the tracks resulted from studio jam sessions, creating an improvisational feel in both rhythms and vocals. He also notes that similarly to her previous albums, the context as a whole feels proudly feminine with the track “Womanifesto” setting the tone.
Entertainment Weekly’s Mikael Wood grades Scott’s latest effort a B+, praising her strong return to music after an acting hiatus. “‘The Light of the Sun’ has a distinctly early-aughties vibe, recalling an era when tempos were slower and voices less Auto-Tuney. It’s a welcome flashback,” Wood writes.
The chanteuse appeared in Tyler Perry’s Why Did I Get Married? and Why Did I Get Married Too? in addition to starring in the Lifetime Movie, Sins of the Mother. She’s accumulated a few notable television credits over the years, as well.
Bestowing 3.5 out of 5 stars on the album, Jaymie Baxley of Slant Magazine describes Scott’s sound as “positively lackluster and dated on the album’s overwrought opener ‘Blessed.’” He later acknowledges approval of the third track “Shame” and the “terrific” “All Cried Out Redux.”
Sputnik Music’s Griff Fuller Jr. showers Scott with praise, grading the collection a 4.5 out of 5. He applauds her “confident” tone, describing the singer as “older” and “sexier,” arguing that the new album may be her best since the debut Who is Jill Scott? Words and Sounds Vol. 1.
“She has always been a shining example of creativity in urban music, and will remain to be the light in a music industry that grows darker and darker in quality and substance,” he writes.

With the exception of the lead single on the Real Thing i thought it was a fairly decent album but my favorite is Beautifully Human followed by her debut album. I know i may be in the minority but i'm not really diggin this new album yet. Seems like she's changing her sound somewhat. Don't laugh at my funk
This funk is a serious joint

I thought it was just me... I LOVE Jill Scott, but I'm having a hard time getting into this one. I don't hate it, but it's not catching me. I loved "Shame" as soon as I heard it, but I was a little disappointed when I played the whole album. (I resisted previews because I wanted to sit down with my new CD when it came).
I'm sure it'll grow on me; it just hasn't grabbed me yet. "Love Hurts. Your lies, they cut me. Now your words don't mean a thing. I don't give a damn if you ever loved me..." -Cher, "Woman's World"

I personally feel that The Light of the Sun is her best overall record since Beautifully Human. The Real Thing was a good album, but it felt disjointed, too erotic and dark at times. I think she has come up with songs that have once again suited her and they go together. Beautifully Human is my favorite Jill album as well and LOTS perfectly compliments that particular album. Her debut album remains unmatched though. Check me out and add me on:

For Jill Scott, The 'Light' Finally Clicked June 23, 2011
Jill Scott had plenty to talk about on The Light of the Sun, her first album in four years, but whenever she would pick up a pen, the words just wouldn't come. So Scott, who concedes she labors over lyrics and writes so hard that the imprint goes through several pages, found freedom in a fresh approach.
She called several friends — musicians and MCs (including The Roots' Black Thought) — into the studio without any set idea about what she wanted to say or do, but the relaxed freestyle process produced several songs.
Executive producer "J.R. Hutson played some break beats and some instrumentals, and things just started coming out," says Scott, 39. "I was like, 'Ohhhh! Maybe I'm not tied to a paper and pen. This is fun.'"
That sense of fun permeates her new Light, even as Scott reveals her feelings about love, heartbreak, motherhood, life's blessings and self-empowerment — everything she has experienced since 2007's The Real Thing: Words and Sounds Vol. 3. Singles So in Love(featuring Anthony Hamilton) and Shame (featuring Eve and The A Group) increased anticipation for her return to music.
"Jill Scott is a creative force, and she's better than ever," says Cori Murray, Essence magazine's entertainment director. "This album is a perfect combination of what we've always loved about her: her live performances, the lyrics, her message.
"Fans love her so much because she has always been like, 'This is who I am. I am passionate about what I do, and I'm going to give it to you.' She seems in a really great place in her life right now."
She'll certainly be busy in coming weeks. Scott, who read poetry at the White House in May, performs an outdoor concert on Jimmy Kimmel Live on Thursday and at the BET Awards Sunday. She'll also co-headline the Essence Music Festival in New Orleans on July 2. Her 18-city Summer Block Party tour starts July 28 in New York.
The new album is the first on her Warner Bros.-distributed Blues Babe Records. Her old label, Hidden Beach, will put out an album of unreleased material, Just Before the Dawn: Jill Scott From the Vault, Vol.1, later this summer.
She's also adjusting to life as a single parent, as she juggles the care of Jett, her 2-year-old son with her ex-fiancé and former drummer, Lil' John Roberts. The couple split two months after Jett was born. She says the toddler doesn't travel well, so she sets her schedule so that they spend plenty of time together.
"I've learned about myself and I've gained more patience than I've ever had," says Scott. "I'm in love with this little person. He is the best gift I could ever get. But being a working mother, it gets a little crazy. When I see his little face and put him in my arms, I'm just (wistful sigh) …"
Scott has been building her acting résumé, but that's on hold while she promotes the album. She's most often asked about her 2008 series, The No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency, based on the books by Alexander McCall Smith. Scott says it's likely that HBOwill produce two new Ladies movies, and she'd love to return to Botswana to reprise the role of Precious Ramotswe.
"Precious is beloved," says Scott, who immersed herself in local culture for the part. "I wanted to become Botswanan, so when I walk the streets, they wouldn't say, 'That's Jill Scott.'"
