Remember Left Eye, Nine Years After Her Death

Nine years ago today (April 25), hip-hop and R&B lost a great soul too soon. Rapper, singer, dancer and songwriter, Lisa "Left Eye" Lopes lost her life in a fatal car accident in Roma, Honduras at the age of 30.

Lopes was headed to herbal healing village, The Usha Herbal Resource Institute, when she lost control of her rented Mitsubishi, veered off the road and turned over several times. Lopes died on the scene.

Lopes was working on a documentary of her "spiritual journey."

Lopes is best known as being the outspoken, feisty rapper in R&B group, TLC. (The "crazy" one from the "crazy, sexy, cool," trio.) The multi-platinum group was behind such Hot 100 No. 1 hits as "No Scrubs," "Waterfalls," and "Unpretty." The act's 1999 album, "FanMail," debuted on top of The Billboard 200 and Billboard's Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart. They've sold 16 million albums in the U.S. and are the second-biggest selling female R&B group of the past 20 years, according to Nielsen SoundScan. There's no doubt that TLC revamped the girl group in the 90s, paving way for other acts.

She had such a good heart, regardless of what the media said about some of the things she did. Continue to rest.

Didn't she have her 'accident' about a week after signing to Suge Knight's Death Row Records? I wonder who collected her insurance.

And we lost her just as we were getting over the loss of Aaliyah, which I also was shaken by. It reminded me of back when Pac and Biggie died, 2 superstars lost right after the other. It is a damn shame.

Yes very unfortunate to lose all of those entertainers. They each have a special place in my playlists always.

This had a profound impact on me. TLC were my girls, back when they sang "Ain't Too Proud To Beg". I wanted to attend a predom AA college because of them. Lisa went through the most drastic change (an ugly marriage, financial troubles, troubles with the band, arson - then she started to turn her life around). RIP LLL.

I loved the 90s and TLC. So many memories with their music in the background.

9 years ago we lost Lisa 'Left Eye' Lopez, she is still missed till this day and like Aalyiah i think she was very underrated as a rapper in her lifetime, she was able to switch flows and substance when hiphop and music was changing throughout 92-2002, thats almost 10 years, Also one of those diverse artists who could collabrate with anyone from Donell Jones (U know wats up) to Mel C (Never be the same) and N sync (Space Cowboy) keeping her lyrics and flow top notch without any hardcore content.

R.I.P Left Eye

It was so unexpected and she seemed on the verge of a new career and outlook on life. The circumstances surrounding her death were wierd as well. One of the passengers was videotaping Left Eye and she was driving that Mitsubishi Montero which is a huge and generally safe vehicle. She was the only one in the car to die. Just strange. She left behind a daughter I believe.

I'M NOT SAYING YOU'RE UGLY. YOU JUST HAVE BAD LUCK WHEN IT COMES TO MIRRORS AND SUNLIGHT!

So true. Aaliyah's death hit me harder than Left Eye. Left Eye for some reason seemed, like 2Pac, expecting to die early.

She also was the only one wearing a seatbelt.

I remember watching that Vh1 special...Either Roc Docs Or Behind The Music..It was so eerie....I dont know if I'm remembering correctly but I think she talked about a dark presence following her or a sense of doom or she had a dream where she died..something like that...and sure enough the worst possible thing happens disbelief

nod You are correct - VH1's Roc Docs. I believe she was perched upon a rock and talking about this dream she had in which she dies. Spooky.

It's her look right before the crash that bothered me. I know it was slowed down for effect, but she gives this tired and knowing glance to the camera and then when she puts her eyes back on the road, she briefly smarts, before skidding off the side.

I can't imagine she was going so fast down that seemingly fairly straight road and didn't see something coming. It's just weird.
