I absolutely love Joni! I'm listening to 'For The Roses' as I type this. Her greatness is so underappreciated. It makes me wonder what's wrong with people. There's a beauty in her music that justs blows me away sometimes.

feels mighty funny

the words rolling off my tongue

"I'm proud of you!!!" lol

(because you're always teaching ME lol)

so glad your drowning

yourself in Joni's albums!!!

I remember when I started

*nostalgia*

it was with The Hissing of Summer Lawns

...

actually it was with Ladies of the Canyon cool

but like you, sis, it's the lyrical content

that drew me in with Joni's stuff

the very lyrics you just quoted

I always loved the first lines of that song

"he bought her a diamond for her throat

he put her in a ranch house on the hill

she could see the valley bbqs from her windowsill.."

then this broad went on to talk about

the Chippendale furniture lol

love how she paints the picture for you

she's the master at that!!!

"there was a moon and a street lamp

I didn't know I drank such alot

til I pissed a tequila anaconda

the full length of the parking lot" lol

first time I played Don Juan's Reckless Daughter

and heard that line from "Talk To Me"
I actually saw the scene in my head! FIRST LISTEN

I love Joni love

when I saw the title of the thread

somehow I knew it was about that section

of THOSL.. and somehow I knew you were the OP!!! lol cool

because those who mind don't matter
and those who matter don't mind."

God knows I've been stubborn,,,,,to be honest, it was you who got me into Sgt.Pepper and this album.

Lamma was the one who got me into Hejira. I'll blame ya'll if my music snobbery climbs up another level because of this, coz it sure shifted my interest on other stuff lol hug

This album is a tough listen, especially if you're a fan of Court & Spark. The Jungle Line just had me scratching my head.

This song is classic Joni, though.

It's so dreamy in places, particularly Centerpiece IMO. 20 years later, I am still growing into this album. More than any other. Hejira was easy for me, even Mingus. But this one is perhaps superior, and definitely more challenging. It's like no other album, really.

you ever tried playing it, I mean on an intrument? Sometimes that helps me to hear the song, rather than the recording

I never try and play any thing that I can't "feel" by listening.

I prefer 'Hissing" & "Hejira" over "Court & Spark", for the same reasons you mentioned, both albums are more solemn, complex and retrospective whereas "Court & Spark" is more straight forward and light. Maybe its where my mind is at right now, I'm sure when I feel like I don't wanna be bothered by the context of the music and would rather settle for a background music, "Court & Music" would do just fine(This is not a slam against this album or the ones who listen to it btw).

The MOST amazing thing about "Hissing" is the fact that I discover news things within the album each time I listen to it. It reminds me of Sly's "Riot" in the sense that both albums have layers on top of layers not just with musical ideas, but lyrical context as well.

The moog in "Jungle Line" is SICK as all get out, btw drool

Hejira :mushy" that was the FIRST thing that I fell in love with once I became a fan. But its funny that you find "Mingus" easier to listen, really? lol I've always thought that "Mingus" and "Don Juan's Reckless Daughter" were her "fuck you" statements to the critics, and her attempt to challenge her listeners, she kinda reminds me of Miles in that sense, the way she would take her listeners in places they wouldn't expect her to be.

I listened to Mingus after already absorbing Hissing, so that probably made it a lot easier.

I think you are right in your comparision to Riot, in that both albums lack the slick commercial songs of the earlier albums but compensate with pure creativity & the layering you're taking about. Lovesexy is kind of the same to me, creating a singular style of music that grabs some people, but may not be for every listener.

Court & Spark is still my favorite, but it's very commercial. Just perfectly crafted songs, and her voice is a little lower & less annoying than it is on Blue lol

This song was maybe the first to grab me from this album. Some of her songs are constructed like Dylan's, meaning verse after verse after verse after verse... but the arrangements are a lot more musical (and clearly her voice is nothing like his). Hejira does more of that.

I love the subtleties of the swelling guitars and her crazy echoey background vocals.

Not to mention lyrics that are genuine poetry

Hi, Harle! Just curious, what of you think of her pieces like these, from the 80's....

From the albums, "Dog Eat Dog" (1985), and "Wild Things Run Fast" (1982)

featuring Larry Klein: Bass, Wayne Shorter : Saxophone

"Ethiopia" - Joni Mitchell

"Love" - Joni Mitchell

...

Same with Robben Ford on Hissing of Summer Lawns. IMO those musicians are better within a specific musical context rather than "axe-urbation" of those fusion records (not that they're bad) that are heavy on technique and light on poetry

"The Jungle Line" is the fuckin' shit! I believe the Moog synthesizer is killer on this cut with the African warrior drums. Too epic and ahead of it's time for a statement in 1975, before Paul Simon got all of the love and praise for what he did in the 80s.
