So that makes it ok?

Someone would be out of their minds to think that Madonna was original in anyway possible, but does that justify what Lady Gaga does?

What exactly does she do? She's a representation of all of the artists who have inspired her in one way or another through the years. Just as any given name in the world of pop music is. Prince is inspired by Jimi Hendrix and James Brown. MJ by James Brown and Motown. The list goes on and on. I can see a myriad of artists in Gaga, but she fuses elements of them into her own unique style. She's not exactly like any one person. That's what makes her unique.

The point is, a lot in pop music is borrowed and inspired by... What seperates Gaga from the other pop tartlets is that she writes, plays an instrument and can sing.

Duh. Like, really, DUH. One would have to be a complete idiot to not know that there is nothing new under the sun. I can't even think of one artist, in any field, who wasn't inspired by, or heavily, influenced by something/someone and turned it around to create something of their own. Some of the most influential and most successful artists were huge thieves themselves. Lady Gaga is far from the first one to do it, but she will barely be the last.

That being said there's a fine line between being 'influenced', 'borrowing', and just outright stealing. Obviously if she had, successfully, been able to create something of her own with that song there wouldn't be a bunch of people pointing fingers at her for her obvious lifting from Express Yourself. What's making it worse is that she's not admitting it or, at least, claiming that it's a 'homage.' In fact, this reminds me of what happened to Christina Aguilera in that video she did and a bunch of people called her a copycat.

My problem with the other statement is that the argument was: If Madonna stole then it's ok for Lady Gaga to steal (from her). That's a terrible excuse.

Had this been 10-15 years from now, it would have been old enough to lift.

Though, adding on to your statement though you forgot what also seperates her from the rest of the pop tartlets are those things, including her crazy outfits, dedication, and her performances.

^ I know a few "monsters" who claim she is though. lol

A few? There are tons of little gremlins out there who are like "Madge and Co. who? Gaga did all of this herself; she is the be-all-end-all!", or they actually choose to acknowledge her as the "new Madonna" and that the "old Madonna" is now obsolete. No one is claiming that anyone in the music industry is purely original, but some people need to realize that without Madge, Prince and all of the other crazy ass musicians who had the guts to do what they did at that time, there would be no Gaga. Hell, some of the musicians need to realize this!

Oh, and "Born This Way" sounds like "Express Yourself." nana

[Edited 4/21/11 16:41pm]

Okay, what part of MADONNA DID NOT ORIGINATE IT do you not understand? You are hellbent on hating Lady Gaga for whatever psychological blockage you got going on, but it has NOTHING TO DO with originality because the artists you just listed had clearly ripped the ones who came before.

Oh, and no the fuck it doesn't. Clean your crusty ass earholes out.

Ouch! You mad, little Gremlin?

The golden trio of the 80s didn't originate it, but they brought a special something that took the entire industry to the next level, and that certainly shouldn't be ignored.

And for your information, I don't hate Gaga. I like most of her music; I just ignore her crazy ass interviews (and stans who would kill anyone who dare speak out against their precious Mother Monster...doh! I'd better start ignoring you now...)

I don't express anger on the internet, babe. Not only is it a fruitless endeavor, but if anyone on the internet ever made me mad, there's no amount of exaggerated punctuation that could convey my venom. Don't try to give yourself a leg up on me cuz I ain't into watersports and you can't get under my skin. smile

The "Golden Trio" were heavily derided in their heydays for being rip offs. Your convenient memory is full of more holes than Stevie Nicks' sinuses. You don't like the music and so you're falling back on intellectual laziness by writing off her efforts as derivative, spouting fiction as fact in some sort of desperate bid to shit on someone over the instanetz.

And maybe people should start ignoring Prince stans like you who think the motherfucker has somehow not been a product of a tyrannical record industry that objectified its own artists to bilk YOU out of your cash on purple lunchboxes, paisley pantyhose, and assless leotards. The Golden Trio, huh. Nevermind the fact Michael Jackson came out in the '60s and the other 2 weren't cashing in on Jimi and Grace Slick's career corpses until 20 long years later.

My apologies, I'm just going by your profile info. And do you see me frisking you? Nobody even brought up terorists, so you got something going on already that you should check up on.

You're still coming across as mighty triflin' given you keep twisting people's words up into knots and then washing your hands of it when you can't keep up. If you think BTW and Express Yourself sound alike then I feel bad for you. It makes me question if critical thinking and a discerning eye are your cups of tea. Who knows how else this kind of tunnel-vision manifests in your life.

But to show you that we're sympathetic to your plight, here...

I think this may be a reference to something I wrote. I just want to clarify that I never claimed that Lady Gaga stole anything from Madonna so I hardly could have said it was ok for her to steal from Madonna.

Now, maybe she did rip off "Express Yourself," I can't say for certain either way, but to my ears I do not hear the similarity.
