great versatile albums

apart from sign of the times, which of your favourite albums are both great and display alot of versatility? I mean an album where the artist/s convincingly do several different genres?

Ummm...when I listen to SOTT, I mainly hear music of the pop, rock, and R&B/funk variety. I don't hear much else.

There aren't many albums like that.

I guess something like MJ's HIStory (disc 2) could be considered for this topic. It has classical themes, rock, r&b, pop and r&b.

I would say that 20Ten is a very versatile album, but only in the sense that it can also be used as a coaster.

The Clash--Sandinista

It's a bit too long and has some filler, but this album is a pretty amazing mix of styles for a punk band. The have reggae, rap, dub, punk, rock, and their own unique style of Clash music. And despite the imperfect presentation, there are some real gems

this one starts a couple minutes in

SOTT had pop, rock, dance, funk, soul, R&B. Plus sarfish and coffee has a psychedellic vibe to me. i think it is a versatile album

Anyone who doesn't say Queen - a night at the opera, the game are clueless. Props to the person who named a wizard, a true star. One that's under the radar but is.incredible is Arthur Browns Kingdom Come - Kingdom Come.

Seriously, this followed by this...come on.

well, not sure if i missed your sarcasm but you mentioned FOUR genres of music there. LOL. The Cross would be rock in sound, but "gospel" in content

If we wanted to throw some hip-hop in the mix, we could definitely add these as versatile albums:

And we missed these too:

Great list!

Shuggie Otis' is one of my fave albums, and even though its musically rich, I'm on the fence of calling the album versatile hmmm whats the 3rd hip hop album you listed btw?

And while she doesn't has a specific all-around versatile album(to my knowledge), I'd say this artist's discography is extremely versatile on a larger scope...

The third hip hop album is Beastie Boys' Paul Boutique...

As for Shuggie's Inspiration Information, it can definitely be considered a versatile record because it does have stylistic diversity on the surface. Shuggie covered many genres and shuffled various moods on that album. It's a rich and versatile record overall. Despite the complexity of the arrangements, there is continuity. Despite the shuffling of styles and modes and aural textures- it's still hella funky and soulful overall. Not one thing sounds like the next on that record. You can't miss that aspect with a defining musical statement like Inspiration Information.

Good point with Nina!

The best proof of that assertion is with this sprawling, complete collection of her legendary Philips period:
