Gwen was out for a good minute. Everybody used to always have to work to get ahead. They just didn't go out and pursue a career only to get defeated when they're pushed for background work (reason why many a frustrating musician these days go the easy route - Idol, i.e. Taylor Hicks, Chris Daughtry, Adam Lambert, James Durbin, David Cook; all these guys had "careers" but wanted to be stars). Back then, singers who wanted to make it DID whatever they could to do it and they loved it. Gwen always seemed humble. She started out singing for people like Aretha and was writing for artists even before she got with Charme and later went the solo route.
