Milli Vanilli's Behind the Music documentary (CLICK ON THE LINK)
Sometimes the first episode of a documentary series is probably their best...and this is one of those moments when it was true.
This was a 1998 redo of the 1997 episode, which ended with hopes Rob Pilatus would rebuild his career, which turned out sadly to not be the case.
Beware of some fuzzy activity with this one though.

They really get a Behind The Music Sham? Really?

That was actually the first episode of this show. The second episode? MC Hammer.

I remember this documentary, and I was along for the whole Milli Vanilli ride from the beginning. "Girl You Know It's True" is still one of my favorite albums of all time, regardless of who actually sang the vocals on it. I love EVERY song on that album.
This documentary does an excellent job laying out the events just as they went down, which allows you to see just how easily Rob & Fab got involved in this whole thing. I don't fault them one bit along the way, and I've always felt that what should have happened was that the Grammy should have been given to the people that actually SANG the songs. Even after they were exposed, I always felt that "Milli Vanilli" could have gone on with the actual real singers out front, and Rob & Fab could have been the backup dancers.
What a handsome guy Rob Pilatus had become. The short blonde hair with hunky body definitely worked for him. And he really had a great sense of humor, even in regards to what they had become, and how they had gotten there. Both guys were really very attractive, it's almost funny to hear about how much they liked girls. They were in a good position for it, that's for sure.
1989 was such a memorable year for me in so many regards. The music of Milli Vanilli was a big part of that experience for me.

And the third episode was Vanilla Ice, am I right?

Hmm I do not recall Ice being third. Not at all...

Well Vanilla did have a Behind The Music episode in the first season. I was just curious if it was the 3rd or not.

girl you know it's... girl you know it's... girl you know it's... girl you know it's... girl you know it's... girl you know it's... girl you know it's... girl you know it's... girl you know it's... girl you know it's... girl you know it's... girl you know it's... girl you know it's... girl you know it's... girl you know it's... girl you know it's... girl you know it's... girl you know it's... girl you know it's... girl you know it's... girl you know it's... girl you know it's... girl you know it's... girl you know it's... girl you know it's... girl you know it's... girl you know it's... girl you know it's... girl you know it's... girl you know it's... girl you know it's... girl you know it's... girl you know it's... girl you know it's... girl you know it's... girl you know it's... girl you know it's... girl you know it's... girl you know it's... girl you know it's...
but seriously though, they actually weren't bad singers, when they tried to sing. i just don't know how much they would find success in the states with the german accents.
and 'girl you know it's true' was written by kevin lyles, the dude who worked at def jam, then was a higher up at warners. and the guy who sang the songs, wasn't he like an ex-gas station atendant or something?
the story is pretty amazing. like black box, and all those groups. but fab (i think it was fab) said that they went over to the dark side...

I know it was shot around, I think, June of '98 so it might've been one of the final episodes of the first season. The real first season I believe took place in either January or February of '98. The original two episodes had a different theme and narrator.

No one was really interested in building Rob and Fabrice as what they were, they wanted a payday but when people realized this charade wasn't gonna last, they pulled the plug.

BEST BEHIND THE MUSIC EVER! I wish they'd show this one more I love it. I mean I feel bad that dude felt he wanted to end his life tho. That's kinda sad. Prince esta muerto...

I did too. It didn't hit me until I read about Seth being MJ's vocal coach. Wow lol

If ever there was a reason to commit suicide (and I don't believe there ever is), poor Rob had a damned good one. All within about a 2 year period: You go from a completely unknown, happy-go-lucky party boy, to SUPERSTAR OF THE WORLD, then quickly shot down to less than zero - a mockery... the laughing stock. The one NOBODY wants to be around. That must have screwed with his head something terrible! And the thing is; he didn't set out to deceive anybody, and always had the aspiration to sing with his own voice.
But all drama aside, it was the MUSIC that got me with Milli Vanilli. I heard them on the radio much more often than I ever saw them on music television. And in 1989, the radio was playing them... A WHOLE LOT! So even if you didn't own the album, everybody knew... "Blame It On The Rain", and "Girl I'm Gonna Miss You" and so on. They were just nice songs.
Poor Rob, man. I hope he found peace.

Prince and a lot of other famous singers used Seth also.
This is an interview from around 2007. The interview is in English. You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit who’s never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton

That's why the name jumped out at me. I was like oh WORD??? It seemed he was hired to at least get them to a reasonable level to show that video as if to say "see, they CAN sing..." I have a feeling he wasn't on the scene until the whole cat came jumping out of the bag. Why would they need a vocal coach if they were never singing live?
Prince esta muerto...

I agree lol it was real bizarre. Then again so was the entire press conference. People were going after them as if they were on trial for murder! As Fabrice said "they were ready to hang us (figuratively)." Money can definitely be a factor of trouble if you're not careful, something both of them learned the hard way.

Didn't hurt Falco. I think Fab is French, not German. Rob is German though. You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. Fabrice was from Paris. And Rob was raised in Munich by adoptive parents. Technically he's half-black American. His father was an Army vet who abandoned him. He and his mother (who was a stripper in German). He was adopted by a father who was a teacher and scientist I believe and from his interview, he didn't get along with them. Might've been one of those rambunctious, rebellious kids. He left home at an early age. I like to know more about their upbringings and how they got to meet and be friends.

Well, with Rob gone now, I doubt we'll ever be hearing the rest of that story from Fab. He'll probably be taking that one with him, and probably feels he's explained enough and owes nothing more (...particularly in light of how he, and Rob, had been mistreated & humiliated).

Fabrice was just on The View. He gave an interview and said he had a song being released on I Tunes today. He also talked about the movie that is being made about Milli Vanilli. The show has an official Youtube channel, so maybe they will put it later. You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. Interesting.

I think that would have the potential to be a very good movie, especially if it plays from their perspective (...which I'd suspect it would).

Someone has uploaded the appearance on The View. It's not from the official channel, so I don't know if it will be deleted by ABC, so watch it while you can. I alway thought it was so unfair to blame these 2 young men who had that tempting offer to change their lives for the better at last and not Frank Farian who was a world wide successful producer and was still pissed that Terence Trent D'Arby who had worked with him before had become a star without him and thus hired these 2 lookalikes who just did not have his voice. Although not a singer, Arnold Schwarzenegger has a German accent, but was very successful in the US.
