Just A Fun Debate Please don't get all crazy this is purely a fun question=]
Well since i wasn't born till 90 =[, I missed the heyday of music videos, my friend tommy who is a huge rocker. We always talk about music cause i love veery genre and he was saying in the late 80's throughout the 90's he said like every time he would watch MTV It was Whitney, Mariah or Janet playing.
So my question is to all those who watched who do you think the queen of MTV was? i guess we can add Madonna for fun to, but who do you think was played the most? Pistols sounded like "Fuck off," wheras The Clash sounded like "Fuck Off, but here's why.."- Thedigitialgardener

MADONNA, without question. Just like MJ, MTV would have entire days or weekends dedicated to her. They played her music video's and had tons of specials dedicated to her. She has also won more VMA's than any other artist I believe. MTV loves Madonna.
True I was born in '87, so I missed out on when she first hit it big, but I remember quite well seeing Madonna video's on MTV from the time I was younger.
Don't get me wrong, Mariah and especially Janet got ALOT of play on MTV, as did Whitney, but Madonna got more play and attention on MTV than the other artists.
I'd say Janet would be second. She was a huge staple on MTV during the 90's. "And When The Groove Is Dead And Gone, You Know That Love Survives, So We Can Rock Forever" RIP MJ
"Baby, that was much too fast"...Goodnight dear sweet Prince. I'll love you always ![]()

Most definitely Madonna. Ὅσον ζῇς φαίνου

Pat Benetar & Heart. You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit who’s never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton

As lacking in talent, you just can't deny Madge's legacy.

Definitely Madonna, but Cyndi Lauper deserves a mention as well.

I think Madonna is definitely the queen of MTV.
And her videos still stand the time, as being amongst some of the greatest short videos we've seen.
Rain, Fever, Human Nature, Bedtime Stories, Vogue, and Power of Goodbye were her best videos

ahahahahhaah well if we had to break it down
Madonna out of the 4 probably had some of the most memorable videos with story, culture & everything mixed in
Janet though in a lot of her videos had stories, and i dug that especially song's like Alright
Whitney & Mariah had some epic looking videos but not a lot of story, just a lot of posing & smiling...
He but i like all 4 not downing any of them lol Pistols sounded like "Fuck off," wheras The Clash sounded like "Fuck Off, but here's why.."- Thedigitialgardener

hmmmm... even though i was old enough when MTV began, i actually never recall seeing MTV at all until 1990 or so... i do remember it being on at peoples' houses, so i would say that pat benetar, cyndi lauper and madonna were played a whole lot. it seems to me that janet jackson was played on rotation much later than these three. i could be wrong.
i grew up in NYC, so i grew up with video music box, new york hot tracks and even friday night videos, where janet seemed to get more rotation in those places. hot tracks were around before BET became what it was, and video music box played a lot of hip hop.
but i'm gonna say (if not madonna) then janet jackson, in terms of being the 'queen of MTV'.

Actually you couldn't be more wrong.
I was familiar with them by the time Janet came to the picture and even then I saw her mainly on shows like Night Tracks (I don't recall her on BET but she probably was in 1986-87) but I remembered catching the premiere of "Miss You Much" on BET and the entire Rhythm Nation movie on MTV in '89.

see? i told you, i didn't have MTV... and whenever i saw it it was at somebody's house... i didn't grow up with mass cable channels like that. i never had access to cable until i was a lot older.

^^I remember a bit of Sade, Lisa Lisa and Cult Jam, & Miami Sound Machine/Gloria Estefan too. There was also The Go-Gos & The Bangles. Maybe Debbie Gibson, Samantha Fox, & Paula Abdul later on. Yep and Lita Ford. A LOT OF FEMALE ARTISTS got heavy rotation on video channels, not just MTV but BET and Night Tracks. In fact BET even played Samantha Fox mainly because of the Full Force connection.

Wait, are we going to argue that Janet didn't get major airplay on MTV? I'd say she's second to Madge on MTV, IMHO. Let's not revise history here folks. Space for sale...

lol I remember that. I remember The Box that used to exist on cable and everyday they would play 'One Sweet Day' by Mariah Carey/Boyz II Men, 'Tha' Crossroads' by Bone Thugs 'n Harmony, and "Fantasy Remix" by Mariah Carey feat. ODB.
In terms of the 'queeen,' it was definitely Madonna, but then Janet Jackson & Mariah were seeing a huge rise in popularity and they were being played a lot in the 90s.

Madonna video premieres were big deals at MTV, & would feature the shiny, big spinning globe at the top of the hour and intros by VJs (video disc jockeys). Madonna ruled with her vid- eos premieres, probably more so than Prince, I'd say.
