Marvin Gaye shot to death 27 years ago today

(CBS) April Fools Day is mostly thought of as a day for pranksters and jokes, but it's also the anniversary of R&B crooner Marvin Gaye's death.

Gaye was shot to death by his father 27 years ago today, on April 1, 1984, after he tried to intervene during an argument between his parents.

The singer would have turned 45 the next day.

His father, Marvin Gay Sr., pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter and was given a six-year suspended prison sentence. He died of pneumonia on Oct. 19, 1998, in California.

Gaye's biggest hits include "Let's Get It On," "What's Going On?", "Ain't That Peculiar," and "How Sweet It Is (To Be Loved by You)."

He was posthumously inducted to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1987.

With all his troubles......we miss Marvin! I think he has more peace now than he ever had on this earth.

Still remember where I was when I heard the news....My friends and I initially thought it was an April Fool's prank....

Shot by his own pervy ass daddy. disbelief Terrible loss to the world of music. Poor Nona.

I'd rather think about his birthday and where he might have been in his life had he not been robbed. I could see him heading up his own music company, enjoying life as a grandfather, touring every other year as his health would have permitted, being interviewed on a TV One special, being honored at the Grammy's and countless other awards show for his lifetime achievement. He would have been 72? Hey, if Tony Bennet could kick it so could have Marvin.

I'M NOT SAYING YOU'RE UGLY. YOU JUST HAVE BAD LUCK WHEN IT COMES TO MIRRORS AND SUNLIGHT!

Marvin Gaye was not played in my house - that I can recall - growing up. My father LOVED Barry White and to a lesser degree The Whispers. My older siblings loved Prince, Slave, EW&F, Chic, Cameo and a few of the other bands. There was no Marvin (believe it or not).

I actually discovered Mavin's music on my own. I heard "After The Dance" playing on the radio and it caught my ear because I noticed he was singing the background vocals also. I had NEVER noticed background vocals in any song, until that song, for some reason. That was all that it took. That blew my mind. From that point on I craved Marvin. I bought quite a few "greatest ofs" and eventually bought "I Want You", "Let's Get It On", "What's Going On" ,"Midnight Love" and a cd of Marvin singing Standards.

When I heard that Marvin had passed - I remember thinking - selfishly - just when I began to discover him he's gone. No idea why that was my initial reaction. But that was the reaction.....it was coupled with sadness.....

I think that he was abusing his father. He said I brought him into this world, and take him out of here nod

You mean Marvin Sr abused Marvin Jr. right? The many stories I've read on Marvin's upbringing and his relationship with his dad all reach the same concludson. The senior Gaye (actually Gay) was abusive to both his son and his wife and had resented Marvin Jr's success. The night that Marvin Jr was killed, he and his father supposedly argued and fought.

I meant what I stated. It was broadcasted, back in the day that he abused his father and he got fed up. Now, Marvin may have suffered abused, and it's possible that the tables were turned.

This is why I hate when his death is discussed. Because it always gotta stem from what caused it. It's kinda like when John Lennon got shot or Donny Hathaway jumped to his death, it's one of those chilling stories that you rather NOT bring up because it still brings out RAW emotion. No one who's a Marvin fan will forgive Marvin's dad for what happened regardless of what caused it. I'm quite over talking about it personally.

No harm, no foul, but I remembered this like I remembered "Thriller". The man made some good music, and I'll roll with that nod

kibbles

i was a teen, going to school, working at a bank. i want to say it was the weekend, and i had just gotten home from work. my mom and i were talking and we were half listening to the tv news. i was looking directly at the tv, and she was over by the window looking out. i saw marvin's picture up on the screen before the announcer started his opening, something like, 'the music world is mourning one of the greats', and i froze. my mother goes, 'oh, god, who is it now', kinda like she was 'over it'. i simply said, shocked, 'marvin'.

you never saw somebody move so fast to get to the tv.

i was not (and am still not) a fan of 'sexual healing' which had been a hit the year before. my mom loved, loved, loved marvin (and al green), so i knew that that song paled in comparison to the stuff he'd already done, including album cuts that weren't released as singles.

i was listening to 'all the way around' last month. i just love to play it over and over.

r.i.p marvin.

Wow I didn’t know it was unheard of to be a fan of more than one artist.

Apparently for some if you don't have a picture of an artist you're a mad fan of, that's a question mark. lol I don't get it. lol
