Wow I didn’t know it was unheard of to be a fan of more than one artist.
Apparently for some if you don't have a picture of an artist you're a mad fan of, that's a question mark. I don't get it.
This, I do know this, but I was kidding |

I take it you've never visited MJJ Community. You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit who’s never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton |

Also, for those who are not already familiar with it, Divided Soul: the Life of Marvin Gaye by David Ritz is a really good bio on Marvin. It was published in 1985. There's another by Steve Turner called Trouble Man: The Life and Death of Marvin Gaye originally published in Great Britain in 1998. Never trust anything spoken in the presence of an erection.

What's Going On and Let's Get It On are great places to start. I Want You is an excellent album. So is Here,My Dear. His 60s output is good, but is mostly a bunch of good singles.
Now, the first 2 duet albums with Tammi Terrell are really good, but the album Easy is not that great. Tammi died when they were recording the Easy album. If you listen to a lot of those tracks, you'll notice that Valerie Simpson (of Ashford and Simpson) finished the album. It's still a decent album, just not as well done as "You're All I Need" and "United".
As for his later material, "Midnight Lady" was a pretty good album overall, but "Sexual Healing" was the only track that really made some big noise. He died while recording what became "Dream of a Lifetime." The big hit from that project was "Saintified Lady" (which was originally called "Saintified Pussy.").
I hope that helps. |

For the past several months I've been playing one of the 2-disc compilations in heavy rotation. Marvin's voice and vocal arrangements are among the Top 10 greatest IMO. I'm sick and tired of the Prince fans being sick and tired of the Prince fans that are sick and tired! |

But as with other famous artists, especially John Lennon, we tend to focus on the day they died rather than the day they were born. Case on point thousands and thousands gather in Central Park on December 8th for Lennon, u are lucky to get 50 on October 9th.

The album was released in November 1969, Tammi died less than four months later in March 1970. She was sick though.
Plus it's Midnight LOVE, not "Midnight Lady" (though that was the opening track of the album) and it's SANCTIFIED, not Saintified. [Edited 4/2/11 11:21am] |

still hurts today. my brothers had Marvin Gaye albums which, somehow I ended up with. Marvin Gaye's voice and stage presence was like a dream. His socially conscious music helped to ease the sting of a country in civil change. He was intelliegent and beautiful and sexy. [Edited 4/2/11 10:57am] |

You were a bit careless with the titles, so I'll correct them for you:
"Midnight Love"
"Sanctified Lady" / "Sanctified Pussy".
No biggie, but could be just a bit confusing to someone |

i grew up with mr. gaye, but honestly, i vaguely remember what happened on 1 april 1984. i was turning 8 years old. i don't even remember watching michael's performance of 'billie jean' even though i remember watching motown 25. my mother played mr. gaye's music consistently, but i don't remember her being sad, or even talking about him being shot. i just remember his music being played around the house. i vaguely remember reports on it, but i don't remember the details.
but to me, 'what's going on' is the greatest album of all times. and i do know the 'going home ceremony' for marvin was the first public instance of STEVIE performing 'lighting up the candles', which ended up on the jungle fever soundtrack. |
