My favorite artists tend to be very involved in writing their own stuff but they don't do it completely by themselves. It's good to have an outside producer or other musicians involved that can be objective so you don't fall into the self indulgent thing. No artist no matter what a genius they are writes a brilliant song everytime. Sometimes an artist needs someone who's not as personally attached to a song to tell them when something isn't working.

Also as someone else said if you write everything all by yourself you tend to stick to the one style you know and repeat yourself. Whereas other people can push you to experiment more and try new things that you normally wouldn't consider doing.
