Betty Davis - Bottom of the Barrel Alright after all the recommendations, I finally cracked down and got Is It Love or Desire and let me tell you, this lady has got me under a spell. Man, I can't stop listening to her work and it's truly fonky. This really had me in awe:
DAYUMM! This is what I call true music. She's dropping funk and knowledge here. [Edited 3/15/11 22:29pm] Check me out and add me on:

On this song, she says some not-so-nice things about disco music

Yep. And it was before the whole "disco-sucks" thing too!
I wish more people could listen to this cut today and apply it to this cookie-cutter pop that's getting worser every single day. Betty was speakin' the truth here. I still can't believe they selved this album in '76. [Edited 3/16/11 0:20am] Check me out and add me on:

Yeah, she got a raw deal It seems that after this album was cancelled, she lost interest in music. She was so edgy and ahead of her time that record labels didn't know what to do with her.

...
Never could understand why folks later got behind Millie Jackson, Brides of Funkenstein, Parlet, etc., but weren't ready for Betty Davis-- I guess you're right she was a few years ahead of her time-- company must've been scared,

Yeah. Millie was just as edgy and bold as Betty was. It's a mystery and even though I'm just getting into all of her albums and work, I just can't believe she went under-the-radar by a majority of people. Check me out and add me on:

No I'll tell you why Millie got sold and Betty didn't:
One did the "traditional soul" sound and another didn't FIT in the "traditional soul" sound. Plus she was more rock & roll than Millie and black rock and roll singers "don't sell records".

And her manner. Betty made Millie Jackson look like Julie Andrews! Real talk!
