Updated: Kid Rock's NAACP Award Sparks Controversy [img:$uid]http://i52.tinypic.com/m9m8at.jpg[/img:$uid]
March 14, 2011
Kid Rock is set to receive an award from the Detroit chapter of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, but many members of the NAACP are protesting the group's decision to honor the singer.
Rock, who will receive the organization's Great Expectations Award at the chapter's Freedom Fund dinner in May, is being criticized by several NAACP members for his frequent use of Confederate flag imagery in his concerts.
Adolph Mongo, the head of Detroiters For Progress and a boycotting NAACP member, told the Detroit News that Rock's use of the flag is "a slap in the face of anyone who fought for civil rights in this country." In an interview with the Guardian in 2008, Rock said that while he is aware of the flag's negative connotations, he mostly uses it to get across a certain attitude on stage. "To me it just represents pride in southern rock'n'roll music, plus it just looks cool," he said. [Edited 5/2/11 10:52am]

Agreed.
In other news, ain't Kid's beloved son black (or technically speaking, bi-racial)? He's always come off as such a doting dad I 've never believed there was a prejudiced or racist bone in his body, although I'm not fond of his cow towing use of the confederate flag. But then when I was younger I had friends from Texas who absolutely insisted that their support of that flag had nothing to do with race in the 20th century vs. states rights, so, I'm sometimes divided on it. Anyhoo, Ludicris looks like a fool in that pic.

This is not even the same thing when viewed in the context of the WHOLE performance and message Luda was tryna send. Kid Rock is not making a statement about ending racism when he wears a Confederate flag, Ludacris was. Kid Rock says he's showing pride of Southern roots (which is odd since he's from Michigan), while Luda was talking about the shame of racism.
In response to the Confederate Flag being worn by Chris "Ludacris" Bridges on the VIBE Awards.
At the end of the performance, I removed and stomped on the flag to reveal my version of the flag; a flag comprised of black, red and green. Those are the colors of Africa. It is a representation and my interpretation of where we were and where we need to go. Racism is just as prevelant now and if we are not constantly mindful of our history and take charge of it; history is destined to repeat itself because of ignorance. In order to move forward, we must never forget where we were
I hope people continue to question and challenge authority, media and themselves because questioning and challenging can only lead to enlightenment. [Edited 3/14/11 12:31pm]

Change doesn't happen over night and the world is full of gray. Not gonna try and defend their decision to award the dude but I do stand by statement in general terms. Space for sale...

I've always liked Kid Rock and never got from him he was the least bit racist. And watching him on Run's House sleeping in Russy's room totally endeared him to me. But, having a child with a black woman, doesn't give him or anybody else a pass. Hell, lotsa slaveowners fucked black women and had children with them and that didn't make them any less racist.

Yeah, he uses it to get across a certain attitude on stage alright....a redneck attitude. And no it doesn't respresent Southern pride, it respresents Southern racism. As for the "it just looks cool" comment, that just goes to show what a fucking ignorant dumbass he is. A similar comment was made by a toothless, long grey beard wearing redneck on the local news a few years ago that was defending our state flag (which has the Confederate flag in the corner of it)...."There ain't a dadgum thang wrong with that thar flag. It's purty." Andy is a four letter word.

I know why Luda wore it and his reasoning behind it. That wasn't the point. I've been to the Freedom Fund Dinner and I stand by my original statement. I knew from the start that I loved you with all my heart.

Well, YOU may have known his reasoning behind it but all you posted was a picture with no explanation. Without the context of his performance others reading the thread could easily come to an inaccurate conclusion about his intent. And I stand by MY statement that Luda's use of the flag is completely different than Kid Rock's.

Kid Rock been donning that confederate flag since jump. He's a cracker southeren white boy and he grew up with that flag. He has a black son for crying out loud. Dude isn't racist. Maybe a tad low on the IQ pole but not racist. I get the sensitivity around the use of the flag but like I said, dude been donning that flag since we first saw him and to expect him to change now is ridiculous. That's like expecting Bill Clinton to all of a sudden stop being a ho. Some things are just set in stone. I'M NOT SAYING YOU'RE UGLY. YOU JUST HAVE BAD LUCK WHEN IT COMES TO MIRRORS AND SUNLIGHT!

SCNDLS thanks 4 posting this, I was getting ready 2 post something negative about my boy.

Actually, no he's not. Dude is from Michigan and grew up richer than a muthafucka. His father owned several car dealerships and he grew up on an estate.

That's my point. Posting an inflammatory pic without context makes it look like he's just another ignant rapper. When he was actually using his performance to comment on racism. This performance is from 6 years ago so a lot of folks on here may have no idea why he was really wearing that outfit.

GTFO! I coulda sword he was a hillbilly. He don't look no kinds of Michigan aristocrat! Oh well, I don't keep up with the rap crowd. I'M NOT SAYING YOU'RE UGLY. YOU JUST HAVE BAD LUCK WHEN IT COMES TO MIRRORS AND SUNLIGHT!

I don't think Kid is racist. I really don't. I grew up around guys like him my entire life. I am from Pennsylvania, but my town has strong southern roots as sharecroppers from Tennessee used to come up from there when tobacco crops didn't need to be picked. I kinda have a soft spot for Kid and I don't believe he is racist and to be honest, I think he is a good guy. He shoots off his mouth a bit too much, but I believe he is honest. I don't like him toting that flag, though. And from what I hear, he has always messed with black women-then and now-he just leans that way, although that doesn't mean shit. hell, the mother of his son had a kid by another man and Kid claims it as his own. I also know two black women who used to watch Kid's son and they said he was nice as could be. But that is neither here nor there. "Lack of home training crosses all boundaries."

That's why his schtick is even more confusing cuz his ass from outside of Detroit. And IIRC he grew up going to private schools until he went to high school where he met his black baby mama.

This Kid Rock info reminds me of that female rapper Bo$$ who fronted like she was from the hood when in reality she went to private school and came from middle class background. It's amazing the image that some of these celebs try and portray all in order to secure a certain fan base. How many of Kid's redneck fans know that he isn't truly "one of them". Still, knowing this now makes me laugh even harder at the NAACP. I'M NOT SAYING YOU'RE UGLY. YOU JUST HAVE BAD LUCK WHEN IT COMES TO MIRRORS AND SUNLIGHT!

But we're talking about this specific canse, and in this specific case, that statement holds no water since the explanation of why the flag is disrespectful obviously fell on Kid Rock's deaf ears. This is why the NAACP needs to be slapped for honoring his dumb ass. I am Sir Nose, devoid of funk

What's really funny is a white father of a black (biracial) son not having a problem rockin' the Confederate flag cuz it looks cool. White folks always hollerin' about raising mixed kids with an awareness of their "white" side. This makes me wonder how much black awareness this kid is getting outside of the history of hip-hop.
