James Brown or Sammy Davis Jr.?

Who was the better showman/entertainer?

Tough one.

Both of them were just incomparable. Sammy could do it all almost and James led his band like a tight battleship.

I don't know, I'm gonna say it's a tie.

You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit who’s never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton

Watching that just put the biggest SMILE on my face! Thanks for posting.

To answer the OP's question. There is no comparing them. That's like comparing water to air.

I knew from the start that I loved you with all my heart.

How do you compare the value of an orange to the value of an apple?

What? Both are ranked as two of the greatest performers in history. I just asked who was better which isn't an impracticable question.

Why does one have to be better? Why can't they have equally in their own ways, just been two of the greatest performers in history, period?

Because they don't even perform the same genre.

Not trying to take this thread in another direction but you know, if two black men huggged that much on a stage nowadays, the headlines the next day would be full of gay rumours.

Its just a marker of how society has changed in such a short time.

Peace be unto the souls of both of these brothas who are legends in their own respective games. I have an admitted James Brown bias, but Sammy was a great entertainer as well.

fast forward, if you wanna see the J5 do 'there was a time'... it's still 'hollywood palace', with sammy davis jr.

and sammy doing 'bad', and mentions that michael is like a son to him:

and one of the greatest songs michael's ever written, dedicated to sammy- he even does the 'sammy pose' at the end:

and this is pretty much one of michael's main teachers in dance:

both sammy davis jr. and james brown were both teachers to michael. it's really hard to say who was the best. they were both great in their fields.

and THIS is one of the GREATEST performances of ALL times:

and you gotta love this- choreographed by bob fosse, another one of michael's teachers:

and this is the album where he gives the girl the tab of acid:

I noticed how they kept calling each other "Brother" or "my Brother" and I could tell that they really felt that way about each other. There was such a sincerity about it, that was very endearing.

We're sorely lacking that kind of love and compassion for one another, in the world we live in today.
