Former Alice in Chains Bassist Found Dead [img:$uid]http://i51.tinypic.com/2gydm6u.jpg[/img:$uid]
March 8, 2011
Former Alice in Chains bassist Mike Starr – who has publicly struggled with drug addiction and appeared on VH1's Celebrity Rehab last year – has died. He was 44.
Police reportedly found Starr’s body in a Salt Lake City home earlier today, though the cause of death is not yet known.
Starr co-founded Alice in Chains alongside Layne Staley, Jerry Cantrell, and Sean Kinney in 1987 and contributed to two studio albums — including the 1992 classic Dirt — before departing in 1993.
Starr would later gain notoriety for his appearance on VH1′s Celebrity Rehab, where he admitted that he was in fact kicked out of Alice in Chains due to drug addiction.
Last month, Starr was arrested for felony possession of a controlled substance after police discovered him with 6 Xanax pills and 6 Opana (painkiller) pills.
"It's a terrible shock and tragedy," his father told TMZ.

This is sad. I don't believe that Mike ever recovered after he was no longer a part of Alice In Chains. I think he's similar to Steven Adler in that they both really wanted to be back with their bands.
Hopefully Mike and Layne are somewhere making some music together.

RIP. I never knew this guy until Celebrity Rehab - which i pretty much watched THAT SEASON due to tom sizemore . Tom Sizemore had a real "connection " with this guy ... at least I thought on the show it came out ... so sad .
Surprising that Tom Sizemore seems to have been gettin together ... now I mean .... that this guy did ...
There is a story there - I think this Bassist was there the night the other guy in ALICE IN CHAINS died ... forget the whole story .. but he always felt guilty for the other guys death or something ... Colonel Angus may be smelly. colonel angus may be a little rough . but deep down ... Colonel angus is very sweet.

I remember seeing him on Celebrity Rehab, and I was amazed when Dr. Drew brought out Layne Staley's mom during their family rehab session. She was very forgiving of Mike starr and told him not to blame himself for her son's drug overdose.

Anybody tempted to try hard drugs should just listen to the "Dirt" album; it ain't a happy record. I don't understand willingly inflicting such misery upon yourself. Once you start, it's hard to stop.
So much talent and human life wasted, truly sad. [Edited 3/9/11 7:08am] * * *

Mike Starr Remembered by Former Alice In Chains Bandmates March 10, 2011
The original members of Alice in Chains are mourning the death of one of the Seattle grunge band's cofounding members, bassist Mike Starr.
In a joint statement Tuesday, guitarist Jerry Cantrell and drummer Sean Kinney said: "Jerry and Sean are mourning the loss of their friend and ask that the media respect their privacy — and the privacy of Mike's family — during this difficult time. Their thoughts & prayers are with the Starr family."
Starr, who was 44, was found dead Tuesday in his Salt Lake City home.
Starr's roommate tells TMZ the musician was "mixing" methadone and anxiety medication hours before he died. Starr's official cause of death has yet to be determined.
His death comes weeks after he was arrested Feb. 18 for felony possession of a controlled substance. Salt Lake City police said he had several painkillers on him when he was arrested.
Starr appeared on season 3 of the VH1 reality show Celebrity Rehab last year.
Dr. Drew Pinsky, the show's host, Tweeted Tuesday: "Devastating to hear of Mike Starr succumbing to his illness. So very sad. Our prayers are with his family."
In a sad twist, Alice in Chains' original singer, Layne Staley, died of a drug overdose in 2002.
Alice in Chains shot to fame in the early 1990s. Starr left the group soon after the release of its 1992 album, Dirt.

I really find Celebrity Rehab distasteful. Exploiting these people for ratings and money, and having folks watch the trainwrecks unfold... it's just bizarre to me. I feel that way about other reality shows too, like Hoarders for instance. These are real people; having their struggles and pain broadcast for all the world to see is really... meh. Some sort of strange exhibitionism. I dunno, i just personally can't watch it. * * *

distasteful ?
i pondered responding to your post ... for a few moments. I decided to respond ONLY to provoke a conversation .
I do NOT totally disagree with you - I have been wrestling with "celebrity rehab" alittle bit for that very reason ... I watched it last when Mike Starr was on ... then I kinda lost interest ... I saw one or 2 episodes with the Leif Garret/Roberts year (was that over yet ... i dont even know )
Dr Drew has been called a media whore by some ... I have just heard a few times - people say the way he does things is horrible to the mental health profession - however ... how many times in life , in the TV realm etc ... do we see these things exploited in some BAD way ...
I think he has brought something like this ... this ugly thing ... to the forefront and I guess there is something to be said about seeing someone with all this money etc ...,just turning into a trainwreck ... like Jeff Conway ... wow .
Look at Charlie Sheen . I am so sick of seeing him on TV however we all watch it .. listening intently ... just to wait for that train wreck to occur .. or think it is occuring as we watch it ... where will it end ? (with Charlie I think there is mental disease that is apparent and I do think it brings up other issues - the guy is super rich and ... noone can stop him til he does (more) harm to himself or others ...
just my .02 cents ... Colonel Angus may be smelly. colonel angus may be a little rough . but deep down ... Colonel angus is very sweet.
