Your TOP10 Acts/Bands that RUINED popular music (1960-2010) here's mine:
1.The Monkees (easily the first corporate/sellout/artificial act of modern pop music) 2.Whitney Houston (enter the era of cheap & crappy hard-dance which replaced the original R&B sound; at least Janet had much better singles...) 3.Poison (they turned hard-rock into a joke, and spawned dozens of crappy imitators) 4.Winger (the most offending imitators of the Poison formula; "Seventeen" is probably the worst single of the late 80s and that's sayin' something...) 5.Deicide (the most hateful and pathetic band of the entire death-metal subgenre; metal stopped being fun in the 90s with the mainstream success of the crappy black-metal and death-metal) 6.Weezer (the godfathers of the boring, insipid & overrated alternative rock of the 90s. At least Nirvana and the Pixies had balls and twisted humor) 7.Alanis Morrisette (I don't hate her, but she spawned the sterile female/songwriter craze of the late-90s and dozens of crappy imitators) 8.Boyzone (perhaps the most insulting dance/pop-boy band of the mid-90s; by comparison, the BSB are respectable and worthy...) 9.Usher (enter the era of cheap & crappy synth-shit/hop, he has spawned dozens of crappy imitators; on top of that his singles are crap... at least the BEP craft good singles) 10.Chris Brown (the worst mainstream rapper of all time, and a complete piece of shit as a person, Chuck D should destroy this little twit...)

1. Pat Boone - In the early days of rock and roll, when much of white America over the age of 21 freaked out at the sight of white teens going happily nuts over the music by black artists, he was brought in to sanitize said black music.
2. Col. Tom Parker - He was the guy who steered Elvis Presley towards Hollywood and their hastily assembled, poorly written schlock movies for him which took nearly a decade to recover from.
3. Rick Dees - Though he recorded "Disco Duck" purely as a novelty song and parody of disco, it inspired a bunch of other no-talent hacks to put out crappy disco records which were unintentionally awful and caused a huge backlash among a large group of rock fans.
4. Peter Frampton - I hesitate to put him here because he was (and still is) an extraordinarily talented musician, but his breakout success and popularity led to the huge commercialization of rock music by money hungry record executives.
5. Milli Vanilli - While it wasn't a secret in the industry that Rob Pilatus and Fabrice Morivan didn't actually sing the tracks they were credited to, it exposed the huge scam that was lip synching and how it pervaded dance pop, including using thinner sexier models in videos for artists such as Martha Wash, who actually sung on numerous dance tracks but wasn't photogenic enough to be seen on MTV.
6. MTV - You wouldn't know it watching the network these days that they were once the ultimate place to watch music videos and bands, but they greatly expanded the popularity and influence of pop music around the world. They also simultaneously crumbled the foundation of popular music by pushing style over substance, making visual apperances more important to a band's popularity than their musical acumen.
7. Marion "Suge" Knight - Brought a level of thuggishness to hip-hop which escalated beyond music and led to the infamous east coast/west coast feud leading to the deaths of both Tupac Shakur and Biggie Smalls.
8. Autotune - Not realy an act but a recording trick which enabled producers to smooth out bad vocals from untalented artists and led to an overproduction of sonically enhanced tracks.
9. Simon Fuller - The original pop impressario of the late 1990's who created the Spice Girls, Boyzone, Westlife, etc. and the creator of Pop Idol in the UK, which became a music juggernaut thanks to the exported success of American Idol in the USA.
10. Sean "Diddy" Combs - He belongs here not for the east coast/west coast feud that he participated in with Suge Knight, but for his subsequent work in the late 1990's and beyond that steered hip-hip towards material excess and living the high life, causing a slew of imitators to rap about money, hoes, and bling.

Actually, the main reason he and other acts like the Crew Cuts existed was because most white radio stations in the US wouldn't play black performers. So Little Richard and Fats Domino wouldn't have been heard anyway. Richard has said this himself. Record labels knew they could make more money with a white act. In a way Pat popularized black music in a way Elvis couldn't (as his early records weren't sanitized, so was considered no different than a black singer by conservative Americans), because white teens would go and seek out the tunes and acts he covered. White adults back then did tend to accept black performers that sounded more "white" than ethnic like Nat "King" Cole, Johnny Mathis, Sammy Davis Jr, or even Chuck Berry.
As far as the "disco sucks" thing goes, it was more a thinly veiled bigotry and racism, and had nothing to do with Rick Dees. First of all, Michael Nesmith is sort of the godfather of "country rock". He wrote Different Drum for Linda Ronstadt, which is one of her 1st hits. The group members did write a lot of their songs, and they fought to do so, especially Mike and Peter. They also fought to play on their own records, and got Don Kirchner fired because they didn't like the songs he was giving them or his taking credit for the music. That's not bad for guys hired as actors on a TV show. They gave Jimi Hendrix some exposure to America as he opened up for them, until parents complained about his act and had him thrown off the tour. Mike was also indirectly responsible for MTV. He also created long form music videos before Michael Jackson. and I honestly think that we all could name 15 or even 20 country-rock acts better/more famous even today than Mike...

That means nothing. Led Zeppelin, Eric Clapton, Stevie Ray Vaughn, Elvis Presley, Bonnie Raitt, etc. are more famous than the black blues performers they copied. But they came from somewhere. you're wrong on all levels
Madonna is NOT a corporate/sellout act. She has ALWAYS had total control of her image and her sound. She has always needed the help/guidance of producers & musicians, yes (she proudly admitted that in the RNR Hall of Fame Induction), BUT NOT THE HELP OF THE INDUSTRY. If you knew anything about pop music's history in the 80s and 90s, you could tell that Madonna has FREQUENTLY clashed with MTV, her own label (Warners), the industry as a whole or even the conservative part of american society. In fact, she's the female equivalent of David Bowie.
It's ok if you don't like well-crafted pop, it's ok if you don't like dance/pop, and it's ok if you only dig acts that write, compose, arrange and produce their own stuff lol , but stop dissing Madonna for the WRONG reasons. | |

Eh, I'm sure mickeydolenz knows more than me about the Monkees but they did write some of their own stuff and may have produced some too.
Personally I have never cared who wrote and produced anything. I'm much more interested in the songs being good. Frank Sinatra and Ella Fitzgerald barely wrote anything but I would much rather listen to them than Barry Manilow and Mariah Carey. | |
