radiohead - yes i finally get them..

after listening to their latest album and loving the lotusflower track and liking the whole album very much....i have been checking out the lost years since ok computer when i couldnt 'get ' them anymore....after listening closely to the albums....yes....some of their stuff is brilliant and also discovered just how good an album 'the bends' is.....i never really got round to listening to it after digging 'ok computer' when it came out but its a brilliant album no doubt....

.

they are still open to self indulgence and i dont get all their tracks but there is enough brilliance there to make me a big follower now....

Unholyalliance

I never had a problem with their work, like ever, but for me, I always had an issue with Thom Yorke's voice. His incessant wailing kills every track he's featured in. It makes listening to the music unbearable.

I still like Creep though.

I really didn't get into them until around KidA/Amnesiac. And then I was like, man, I really dig this. Been a fan every since. Love the new album The King of Limbs. I listen to it quite frequently. Good stuff.

Hey BB, you should search out all of their B-sides. Some of their B-sides are as good if not better than their album tracks. Try My Iron Lung ep from The Bends, and Airbag/How Am I Driving ep from OK Computer. Great companion pieces to their respected albums. cool

glad you are enjoying them! In my view they are the most important band of the last 20 years, easy.

I agree, seek out the b-sides. They have some killer songs hidden away as bonus tracks on singles (The Trickster, Pearly, Bishop's Robes, Talk Show Host, Kinetic, etc, etc)

Albums I COMPLETELY dig

-Kid A

-In Rainbows

Songs I dig

-the classics/singles off The Bends (not mad about the album-tracks, too mellow for my taste)

-many songs off OK Computer but not the entire album, I don't like the flow/vibe of that album, it depresses me

-some songs off Amnesiac

-a couple of songs off Hail to the Thief

-a couple of songs off Pablo Honey (but not "Creep", lol)

I still have to listen to their new album...but I'm not holding my breath...

i have been listening to the b sides from ' the bends' era...yes..very strong...

i also agree with unholyalliance that thom yorke does tend to wail on the tracks which was something that did put me off them a bit ...as i said...i dont love everything they do ...but there are enough brilliant moments on the albums to justify their place as one of the most important bands of the last 20 years..

Don't worry, the new album is great. Imo. Did you like Thom's solo album The Eraser? If so, you'll like the new album. It resembles that in style and approach more than In Rainbows or HTTT. It's more of a quiet but upbeat affair. No big rockers. I dig it for what it is. Which is different but very good.

pablo honey wasn't a strong album when compared to it's follow up, but it did have creep on it, which was an insight to the classic radiohead sound captured on the bends. the b sides and other tracks recorded around that time were also great, as that was when the band were at their peak. ok computer was a masterpeice, more great b sides. everything from the bends and ok computer sessions captured a top band at the peak. but then thom got interested in electronica and moved towards the sound of kid a and amnesiac and left many fans behind

many people considered radiohead the pink floyd of the 90s but then they changed into a completely different band, although the same line up and they kept playing the old hits at gigs along with the new stuff, so people went to see them live but wanted the old stuff and just put up with the new stuff to get to the old

as much as i like new directions in music and appreciate new and interesting styles of music, and as much as i was a massive radiohead fan, i still can't enjoy the music made after ok computer, half as much as the music made before then. i sometimes think it's a case of the emporers new clothes when it comes to reviews of radiohead of this millenium over the last

now muse on the other hand took the radiohead baton and ran with it. they make music that sounds more like radiohead than radiohead does. like primal scream making the best stones albums since the 80s

I'm kind of the opposite of this. I love the more esoteric, experimental, electronic side of Radiohead.

I came to like them through KidA/Amnesiac. And yes I do like the stuff before that obviously, but I listen to the KIdA and up stuff more often. Just my preference. cool

I'm right there with you. I have all the albums prior to In Rainbows and I just do not get why everyone raves about Kid A and Amnesiac. There are good bits and I guess they are interesting but it's not anything that I really enjoy listening to. Some of Hail to the Thief is pretty good but there's enough "weirdness" to keep it from being a great album. The Bends and OK Computer are both great all the way through and while they are not exactly conventional they are filled with great songs. Every once in a while I will listen to Kid A hoping that I will finally "get" it but so far it hasn't happened yet. It appears that Radiohead are the ultimate critics darlings and no matter what they do it will be hailed as a masterpiece.

I think it was Noel Gallagher who said "I liked Radiohead better when they wrote songs" and I have to agree.

Radiohead are da greatest. Was a little dissapointed though with The King Of Limbs though. Wish theyd do like a straight out rock album or a straight out electronica album, instead of kind of dabling in between. Or something completely different all together. Also I sincerely hope we do not have to wait another 4 years for the next album.

i just got their greatest hits at a closeout sale at Borders (i'm like here's my chance). i haven't made it through the entire cd and i'll MAKE myself give it repeat listens, but so far.....uhhh confused i feel like i did when i got Collected from Massive Attack (what am i missing here, "i had to be there", whatever). So far only Creep would get a repeat listen. the best thing seems to be their song titles.

ps. i know a Greatest Hits album may not be the best place to start necessarily but they SHOULD make you want MORE right?!!

i remember going to see radiohead play 2 nites in a row at the tent tour in support of the follow up to ok computer. they played the thursday and friday just before kid a was released. the album had been leaked a few days earlier so i was familiar with the new material so was aware what it was like, and i knew the setlists from other gigs so knew what to expect. both nights i was front row. there was great expectation from the crowd expecting the dark side ok computer v2, and not what they did hear. i remember walking home and overhearing people say it was the shittest gig they had ever been to in their life, as they didn't expect the new material and the first night was mostly new material upfront in the set with a few older tracks tucked away near the end, so pretty hard going hearing so much new material anyway, but as it sounded like a different band almost it was hard going even knowing the tunes, so to someone hearing it for the first time must have been even weirder. fortunately the next day thom said "it's friday night in glasgow, party time" or something similar in his ironic way and the set was completely different with a lot more old tunes and more mixed up and up front with the new tunes taking more of a backseat and mixed in better in between familar stuff, and that was a much better gig. it was very interesting to see a band in two consequitive nights sounding so different. you get used to that with prince, but you don't normally get much of a change seeing other bands live, it's usually the same every night, even if REM do change songs around a fair bit, with their long sets and similar sounding songs you can't really remember which ones they've done or not. i saw them 2 or 3 nights in a row in stirling castle (which was released on dvd) and whilst the setlist changed, the generally feel of the shows were the same, apart from one of the shows had more idiots throwing plastic beer glasses at the stage and pissing off the band big style

It might be a better buy to just track down the recent Collectors' Edition of those albums. For instance, they're cheaper on Amazon than buying multiple EPs and singles.

"Karma Police" is the song that really got me into Radiohead. I will say it's very odd to me that you can't find anything else on OK Computer you like. You obviously know what you like better than anyone else, but I'd suggest spinning it again if you haven't recently.

I've noticed with Radiohead seems that there is no middle ground with folks. Either you like them a lot or you're kinda...ehh. And it surpises me when I see folks saying that Creep is like the only song they like. Lol. It's cool. To each his own. And that song did put them on the map but it is one of my least fave Radiohead songs. Lol. Like I said, to each his own. wink
