Before he was a producer and judge on American Idol, Randy Jackson made his name as an in -demand session bass player for the likes of Carlos Santana, Narada Michael Walden, Journey, Blue Oyster Cult, Ernie Isley, Angela Bofill, Billy Joel, George Michael, Stevie Nicks, Stacy Lattisaw, Bruce Springsteen, Alice Cooper, the Charlie Daniels Band, Herbie Hancock and Jean Luc Ponty...
This track, 'The Final Truth' with Jazz violinist Jean Luc Ponty, from 1982, gives you an idea of what he used to do....
with Journey
...
with Narada Michael Walden
with Angela Bofill

Randy is a bad dude on the bass. His bass solo from that Journey concert is killin'.

Randy has been in the mix 4 quite a while but he never made the LOOT like he is making on Idol. It's the main reason he has NOT left the show like all of the other judges have.

Oh, definitely! Session money is respectable, but it certainly doesn't compare to high profile gig like that! He's a household name now.....

A lot of the popular music now just involves computer software, drum machines, and sampling. So being a session musician is not as in demand like it was decades ago. Most of the music that does use session players is not mainstream popular. You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit who’s never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton

Randy is cool. I knew he was the bass player for Journey, but I didn't know he also played bass for all of those other groups too. RIP, mom. I will forever miss and love you.
