With the exception of some electronic acts, the majority of the stuff I listen to regularly is pre-1990. And within the past 6 months or so, I'd say it's pre-1980.

I suppose I'm the odd man out here in that I listen to mostly current music like Dum Dum Girls, Joanna Newsom, Goldfrapp, etc.

Having said that though, I have been listening to 60s music almost exclusively over the last few weeks in preparation for the current org music poll. Once that's over I'm sure I'll go back to listening to new music most of the time.

When I say most of the time, that would mean around 60/40 in favor of newer artitsts.

I vacillate between old stuff (mostly 70s, 80s and 00s) and new releases, but I'd say my average comes pretty close to a 60/40 split in favor of new stuff as well. I find that I tend to revisit older stuff when there isn't anything new that is super thrilling.

Feel free to join in the Prince Album Poll 2018! Let'a celebrate his legacy by counting down the most beloved Prince albums, as decided by you!

I lisen to a lot of oldies, but every so often I find new artists to listen to. For me, I like to acquire as much music as possible. There's always a possibility that I may not be listening to something that I could, possibly, enjoy.

I may venture out and visit other eras...but the 80's is my home base. I cant get out.

Once I have overstayed my welcome in other time periods..I LIVE in the 80's.

The 70's are alright too..but ..without those synths and hard beats I feel like something is missing..fifties and sixties are fun too sometimes...90's are fun especially for dance music...2000's are kind of some return to funk and some nice jams....

This is exactly how I feel! I can get into newer albums for a bit but somehow they just don't stick and then I return right back to the 80's. People laugh at me saying i'm stuck there but oh well. I can't help it.

I'd flip the question. Does anybody listen 2 newer artist? I listen to 95% older artist.

Of course. There was a comment earlier that the members of this forum are still stuck in the 80's. Well, in my 8 years here I've discovered more new artists that I would have otherwise missed.

Music is like food. I consume too much of it lol but I've come to recognize the need for a balanced and diverse diet to maintain good health.

I'd say I take in about 2-4 albums per year from new artists (artists/acts whose 1st releases were in the last 3-5 years), and several more new releases from established/"older" artists (1st releases more than 5 years old), plus several singles from new acts.

And "newer" to me could also mean "older" artists I didn't give much of a chance or didn't know much about. Heck, 10 years ago, Cannonball Adderley and Horace Silver were "new" to me. 5 years or so ago, Radiohead was "new" to me.

I dig..............I suppose one has 2 define "Older" as well.

I would define older as artist that have been around longer than 7 or so years.

I have been listening to the old J5 and Jacksons records a lot recently.

And yes, I do listen only to older artists.

First off I am completely old skool! I can appreciate newer artists such as Kanye West, Gaga and couple others but really my heart belongs in the 80'swhere music is concerened. Actually where everything is concerened, lol! There are a ton of albums/artists that I listen to on a regular basis as if they are brand new. Here's an example....

Madonna

Rick James

Debbie Gibson

Ray Parker Jr.

Rockwell

Dazz Band

The System

Dead or Alive

Vanity 6

Apollonia 6

How about you guys? Still rocking older acts as if they just came out yesterday?

Hell yeah. I listen to music that were released BEFORE 1994 more often than the music that came AFTER 1994.

It's not a matter of just listening to them on a regular basis, that's all I listen to period. I don't listen to anything new period, unless it's something new from Prince, and I have been that way since the mid to late 1990s.

I've noticed now since we're in the 2010s, one of the oldies stations has added stuff from the 1990s to their usual format of 1970s and 1980s. When a 1990s song comes on, I change the station immediately because I can't even stand to hear it whatsoever because it depresses the hell out of me.

I have nothing against new music.

I've had Radiohead in my head and then Nikki Minaj.

Listening to 'Pink Friday' as I type.

But I have a lot of favorites that have come with me over the years.

Sometimes it for the memories and some songs have layers of them.

And they fade in and out after being overplayed once again they fade but I have a core that I return to over and over from 2011 and back to before I was born.

I don't want you to think like me. I just want you to think.

If you can count music created in the 90s "older artists", then yes. The only thing I listen to on a regular basis that is before the 90s is Prince, MJ/Jackson 5. Otherwise 90 really. I listen to 90s Bone Thugs N Harmony almost every single day. As well as others. But being made in the 90s, I don't know if it quite falls into the same categories.

I will say that I like to 00's-present more than most 70's, 80's, and very very early 90's. Sorry.

I listen to Marvin Gaye and Luther Vandross every day.

Two great vocalists who are, sadly no longer with us but live on through their sweet sweet sound.

You mean you're gonna actually hear what we play tonight? You're not gonna make up the notes in your mind?

I think everyone here still listens to older artists on a regular basis, including me. (But not exclusively.) Most good stuff was recorded before I was born.

all the time,... I'm 29, but listen to stuff like Woody Guthrie, Robert Johnson, Loretta Lynn, Tammy wynette, Hank williams, elvis, Bill haley, Bob Dylan,... all the time

to coin a phrase by HankIII: "I wanna hear them old songs, nothin' of the new!"

It was not in vain...it was in Minneapolis!

I think that's remarkable! So there's not one artist from today that you sort of like? By the way, I generally can't stand 90's music. I think it sounds more dated than 80's music. I try to listen to a few current artists so that I won't be completely out of the loop but I respect that you don't dig new stuff.

I have to agree with you about 90's music, especially R&B. nod And when I talk about R&B, I mean strictly R&B songs and not the R&B/hip-hop hybrids which became so prevalent around the middle of the decade and took over most of the R&B music since. I was a big fan of Boyz II Men, Jodeci, and a few other R&B acts back in the day, but when I listen to them now, the music just seems really cold and artificial, thanks to the overwhelming influence of synthesizers and drum machines. Even Luther Vandross' 90's material seems out of sorts with his earlier material from the 80's. The only stuff I can get into from that period besides Prince and Mariah Carey is D'Angelo, Maxwell and Lauryn Hill's Miseducation album.

I think everyone here must have heard some songs from the last 5 years or so, unless they don't have a TV or a radio or whatever. There is some good new songs, just not top 40 hits.
