El DeBarge checks himself into rehab

BlackVoices.com can now report that R&B veteran El DeBarge has entered a drug rehabilitation center.

Having known for several weeks that the 'Second Chance' singer was facing some challenges in regards to his sobriety, his label Geffen Records has now confirmed and issued a statement about DeBarge seeking treatment.

"I hate to disappoint my fans but it is necessary for me to take the time to work on me so that I may continue to share my music and my story with everyone. I thank everyone in advance for their prayers and well wishes and hope that you will respect my privacy during this time," stated DeBarge.

Though Geffen Records is saying the 49-year-old singer "voluntarily checked himself" into rehab, BlackVoices.com knows that DeBarge had a serious relapse in recent weeks and it was rap star 50 Cent who played a significant part in helping get the singer into a recovery facility.

Regardless, all of DeBarge's personal appearances and shows have been postponed.

The singer was slated to appear on the R&B star Kem's 'Intimacy Tour' with Ledisi, which kicks off on Feb. 17 in Houston.

So much for a "second chance"...

I think all the attention, pressure to make a comeback and fear of going on tour played a role in his relaspe. If you watched his reality show that aired on TVONE, he had been living with his managers and was drug free. The moment he got back into the game, it seemed his willpower was waning. Poor thing...I hope he's in real rehab and not that lindsay lohan bullshit else he will never fully recover.

He's been looking so frail too. He needs to get his overall health back on track.

I get a little mushy inside when I think of him sitting in that diner with his eldest daughter saying "Don't make me have to hurt nobody cuz I'm a nice guy, I really am a nice guy" or something to that effect. He just had this look in his eyes like he had so much healing left to do. I believe he is a nice man who has just been battling the devil too damn long.

My brother, who is a recovering drug addict and,(been clean for 20 years) says, that the this is a necessary step towards his ongoing recovery. Even though my brother has been clean for 20 years, he sometimes felt the urge to use and had the good mind to go straight into rehab. It happens and people should not be in a hurry to judge and just wish him well. Addiction is like a weak muscle that needs exercise when it gets weak. I'm sure, El and Ted Williams, will be back. Both stronger than ever.

Yea, the fact that he admits to having a problem is a step in the right direction.

This is too bad, I hope he can get better and healthier. Even if that means not coming back to the spotlight.

I have a relative who has battled addiction, and though he has been clean for probably 20 years, its like it is never over because he goes to meetings every single day, sometimes more than once per day. He knows what he has to do to stay on track and we are proud of him, it just seems so hard.

Good luck El.

That's true. Just glad he had the mind to say "no, I can't go back". He needs to stay with supportive people that won't be scared to give it to him straight until he can be sure to be back on his feet. It takes time.
